Bear in mind that Singapore has a population density of 8,000 people per square km.

The UK has an average population density of 261 people per square km, or about 3% of that of Singapore.

Even London (the London Metropolitan Region) only has a pop density of 1,500, less than one-fifth that of Singapore.

Be nice if it did, no objections, but start with not allowed to buy a car bigger than say a kia piccanto without a parking space and make all street parking spaces piccanto sized, (bigger cars with parking permits issued on the length of the vehicle) Example per permit >4metres £200 next 25cm @33% plus, following 2cm at 100% plus, over 4.5 metres 200% plus then a limit of cars per person, then household...

But before that invest in our dire public transport sytem..

We have the nephews and niece coming from canada at christmas but cannot reasonably collect them fro Gatwick as so many services cancelled over chtistmas that we will have to go by car.

It's effectively already limited numbers by the tax rates. It costs about £80k to buy something like a Toyota Corolla once the vehicle permit is included. On top of that, there's road pricing on the expressways. This limits cars to only the richest 15% or so.

However unlike here, it's genuinely possible to live there without a car because the public transport works properly, and for those journeys when a car is really needed taxis are reasonably priced.

Bring it on. Note that public transport investment increased by 30% prior to Singapore roll out.

Of course-if this happened in London-it would be because the Mayor had stopped being a spoil sport and brought back Uber, he'd slashed black cab fares, tripled the congestion charge and widened/increased the amount of bus lanes.
