OK, just a proposal for now. But, how long before they decide that we become "stressed" at 60, and decide that they have to change it again?

Crazy idea.

Who wants to work in the lane next to one with heavy traffic doing 60. Even 50 would be bad enough.

Agree. While I'm heartily in favour of evidence based policy making I don't think the evidence here is adequate. What the hell is relevance of heart rates to whether 60 rather than 50 through roadworks eases congestion? I thought there was actually earlier evidence thast road capacity was maximised at 40, one reason we have variable limits on 'Smart Motorway'.

I'm a frequent user of J16 to 19 sections of both M1 and M6. Both have long term 50 limits for installation of smart motorway infrastructure. Both move far more freely than when limit was 70 and there was constant slowing because of 'concertina' braking.

EDIT: HAving read article to end it says :

But Mr O'Sullivan (of Highways England) said that lower speeds were likely to be maintained in areas with narrow lanes, contraflows or where workers are close to the road, due to safety reasons.

So it's a bit of a red herring as vast majority of major works involve narrow lanes.

Agree also.

Seems to me like a classic case of "we can't enforce a totally sensible limit; therefore we'll give up trying to do so, but dress it up as being done for the welfare of the motorist".

Ridiculous idea....as I'm sure many highway workers will agree.

If the proposal/argument is so convincing then why don't they put the general M-way speed limit up to say 80mph.?

It all sounds great in theory, being able to get away from the now too many idiots in lorries sitting a cars length or closer from your chuff (plenty of half wits in cars and vans do this but they weigh up to 2.5 tons not 44 and shoudl brake faster), unfortunately said idiots are doing a genuine calibrated 56mph, so the typical car driver with the typically overeading speedo will have to travel consistently at around an indicated 65mph in order to keep away from them, and in the push and shove of traffic maintaining constant max speed does not happen.

Many lorries stay on the limiter at 55 through these works because the camera system will more than likely ignore that 5 mph, so if set to 60 we assume up to 66 will be ignored by those same cameras, what could possibly go wrong?

Can these nerds in white smocks not do something constructive with grants/funds instead of coming up with half baked lunacy like this or wasting £millions playing around with autonomous vehicles which will not work on overpopulated Britain's roads.

Who wants to drive at 50 in coned roadworks with no-one working in the road at all?

Perhaps the answer is 60 is it's coned - but 40 if workers actually present next to the travelling lanes - they do try to leave one lane buffer anyway.

GB - part of the problem is the number of cars doing 46-47 true speed because their speedos show 49, and it's not all older drivers.

If you see me in yon lorry in the usual roadworks, you will find me doing 74k's (roughly 46mph) on cruise sat in the inside lane, if i come up behind someone doing 44mph that will do me fine too, there will be at least 4 artic lengths gap between me and the vehicle in front.

So long as people exercise some lane control and don't tailgate it doesn't matter what speeds within reason anyone travels at, i don't treat the limit as a target, but for balance nor do i worry about limits in camera free open roads when safe to make progress either.

I don't travel through at 50 unless its very quiet ie early hours, i do not want to be involved with all the pushing and shoving, that applies to whatever vehicle i'm driving now, quite happy for them all to come past me bulging eyed a cars length from the vehicle in front gripping the wheel as if their life depends on it, no wonder Costa/Starbucks (other overpriced coffee brands are available) are opening drive thru coffee stops in MSA's, these pushy drivers must be shattered after an hour tops.

The trouble with doing the limit exactly is that almost without fail you will find someone behind, which i wouldn't mind but they will invariably be a tailgater and these types can't bear to be stuck at a whole 4mph below their target speed, win win for me :-)

As an aside what is about tailgaters, i sometimes wonder if i had a fast car again and travelled at 125mph whether i'd still find the usual suspects at exactly a cars length from me, its such odd behaviour.

I've never actually been on a 50mph limit where the traffic wombles are actually present. Should only enforce this limit whilst they are actually working!

Many have 50 mph average speed camera enforcement - this is now regarded as normal for all roadworks of that nature.

The limit is because of narrow lanes, protective steel basrriers etc. and kit moving about on site. I've pretty much never done M1 16-19 or vv without people at work somewhere on the project.

I would really love it if traffic on motorways was "pre-loaded" so that only a certain number of vehicles could use the lanes at any particular time.

Overhead gantry speed signs could then mean that all drivers should travel at a MINIMUM of the speed indicated--so at 50mph--nobody allowed to go slower, 60mph nobody allowed to go slower etc...

To compensate -just shut off joining junctions till "a computer" says that traffic load is decreasing for all exept public transport(buses) Motorists would then have the following options.

1) Wait till the road is lighter or pay a heck of a large fee( really £Big) to join.

2) Find an alternative route

3) Give up your car and sell it

4) Go by bus or train
