Any - The death of recycled parts? - Steveieb

Met up with one of my old colleagues at our annual reunion.
Has all his own VAG software and uses it regularly to fault find on his A4 1.8 T
But his concerns about how we are being controlled secretly by the motor manufacturers is interesting.
Firstly as you know all new parts have to be coupled to the cars main computer. Fair enough but he claims that new replacement parts have a one time code to couple up . If the car is scrapped and the parts removed the unit has a one time access to couple with the car's ECU and hence will fail to work a second time
Another example he claims is the Main Dealers difficulty in diagnosing intermittent faults. Apparently the manufacturer requires proof in the way of a print out of a permanent fault before they authorise a repair under warranty. This could explain why we see so many stories here of customers experiencing major difficulties in convincing dealers of an intermittent fault because they may not be reimbursed by the delver .
He has none of these problems with his second car which is a Mini Moke.

Can't comment on recycled parts, but I have had recent experience of main dealer diagnosis of intermittent faults.

My car exhibited occasional judder of the auto gearbox. When I say "occasional", I mean after a drive of 30 minutes or so and in certain specific circs: going up steep hills, for example.

Took it to a Ford dealer, they could find nothing wrong at first, then suddenly, later that same day, they could. I can't be sure, but I think the service department did me a huge favour by "finding" a known fault even though on that particular day it wasn't present, informing Ford of the fault and thereby allowing the work to be done under a warranty which is due to run out next year.

So all is not lost, just yet.

Motor manufacturers are moving away from the regular Obd socket ,which will make regular diagnostics even more difficult for the man in the street.Hopefully this will make intermittant faults easier to identify (?).with faster access to the car computor network.Take a look here ;www.mentor.com/products/electrical-design-software...c

I presume that makes the computer system more like a home computer, where each part has its own software driver, each driver can report minor problems to the computer and it tells when a problem is occuring.

unlike the system now that needs a fault to occur for a certain amount of time for it report as a faulty part, but can get it wrong ?

correct me if wrong but thats how I read it

My MB Independent uses Star software but he says that on some faults that takes him only so far. Then its down to experience and having a supply of second hand parts to swap over.

But my car is an 07 so the electronics are not so complicated. But if parts arnt going to be good for one application this option wont be around for long. So if the replacement new part dosnt solve the problem , hard luck the customer will have to pay.

The motor industry is motivated to making cars nothing more than white goods (and it is nearly there), a major failure and it is essentially the end of the product, go out and get a new PCP to pay for the latest under engineered over styled motor vehicle is the message from the manufacturers.

I would like to see major components of cars with an MTBF rating, vehicle makers for sure have these failure details but would not be too motivated to release the information. Until the people vote with their feet and avoid so called 'premium' manufacturers selling the daily bread and butter of under engineered white goods things will continue with the current trend.

It is pretty amazing how many buyers overlook makers such as Kia and Hyundai with the long warranties and opt for 'premium' makes with short carefully worded warranty terms in which so little confidence is shown in the so called 'premium' product.

Money shouts, class whispers. If I won the lottery for example, I wouldn't have any 'premium' German car

Honest John had a message from someone worried about continuing to get parts for his Kia if South Korea was invaded by the North.
HJ replied that car parts are the least of our worries if Kim decides to move South.
But maybe some people worry about the narrower agenda?

New parts from Korea would have the advantage of glowing in the dark .. fallout from the nuclear response (I am being serious)
