2009 Hyundai i30 - Insurance renewal and NCD - galileo

Received my insurance renewal notice today: as usual, checked comparison sites, lo and behold, my insurer was in fact the cheapest, so will renew at the quoted price, same as last year, just under £400 with protected NCD, guaranteed courtesy car etc.

However, I see from the table of no claim discounts that the maximum claim free period listed of 9 years entitles me to 80 % discount.

This would mean a full premium of £2000, which seems high for a retired, advanced driver with 56 years clean licence, car garaged overnight, 8000 miles a year and for a standard 1.4 petrol Hyundai i30.

I suspect our postcode is the main factor, as it is classed as near the town centre and I know West Yorkshire does not rate well with insurers.

Out of curiosity, what do any backroomers with similar 'respectable' profile pay who have a more favoured rural postcode?

I got my renewal from IAM Surety, couldn't beat it on comparison sites or going direct.

Retired, advanced driver, now 70 so premiums expected to gradually increase, two SP30's, car on drive overnight, 12,000 miles/year - renewal premium £410 with £0 voluntary excess, protected NCD and courtesy car - oh yes, high value VW Touareg 3.0 TDi Group 43 insurance.

Given you should be a much lower risk than me, the similarity in premium seems to indicate you live in a very high risk area.

But things are looking up - many drivers laud LV car insurance - but in previous years they wouldn't quote me!, but this year they quoted £928 so progress but still taking the P.

Everyone I know is getting unexpectedly high renewal premiums. I believe the culprit this time is the ogden rate.

www.gibbsdenley.co.uk/what-is-the-ogden-rate-and-w.../

That and the increase in Insurance Premium Tax.

www.rsabroker.com/news/ipt-increase-1-june-2017

It's the perfect storm for insurers. Premium reducing and claims costs increasing.

Throw in increasing admin costs. Staff do like to be paid and get pay rises etc. Energy Cost Increases Business Rate Increases. Poor return on funds invested. And so forth.

Hope this does give you some general idea of why your premium is a bit high this year. Even before you look at your particular circumstances.

From your post it sounds like you do everything right. Especially shopping around.

FWIW my own premium was up 60 quid this year.

I'm 40, my grumpier other half is 34 and I pay £220 on our 12 plate Polo 1.2 TDi and £260 on our 64 plate Honda CRV. My trade policy dipped just below £1,000 this year for the first time too. Benefits of living in a quiet small town on the west coast of sunny Scotland.

I'm 47, SWMBO is 46. Both clean licences, both 10+ years NCD.

We live in rural North Wales, car kept on drive, used for SDP and commuting, 15k miles per annum on policy (we actually do about 12k miles in it)

We're with IAM Surety.

This year, our renewal premium jumped from about £230 to £320. So I checked around, using the online sites - on the basis that customer inertia was probably partly the reason for the increase.

Nobody else could come in under about £450.

I have to admit West Yorkshire has a high incidence of car theft and I believe Bradford has the UK's highest percentage of uninsured drivers. A vicious circle; the more expensive insurance becomes the greater the temptation to not bother, which pushes up premiums for those who do - - -

Northants, Kettering, all cars fully comp, the first two have full NCD and are protected, the Merc is on a second policy in my name @ 2 years NCD.

2002 Outback H6 (SWMBO own insurance) SAGA, around £240.

2005 Landcruiser LC5, Cornmarket (specialise in LGV, PSV and IAM) around £240 also..

1996 Merc E320 Coupe (Wi24 model), Cornmarket, just under £200, though mileage voluntarily restricted to about 3k, which it won't do.

Thanks to all for the data, seems to support my 'Postcode' theory.

Two years ago I had insurance through IAM with cornmarket for £259, a much lower premium than my previous insurer (LV).

However, for renewal after one year they quoted £716.37, not including a courtesy car or a credit card/cheque transaction fee of 3%, to cover exactly the same risk..

60 of 70+ comparison sites were cheaper, so having had good service from them in the past (adding other drivers for short periods, detail changes etc) I went back to LV and will renew this year.

IAM Surety at Cornmarket is usually excellent value but every few years the premium shoots up for no obvious reason - that's the time to do a thorough market comparison getting like-for-like quotes and invoke Surety's "price-match" option - I've had to invoke it 3 times in 15 years of membership and once invoked the subsequent premiums are in line with the matched premium.

"price-match" is a misnomer - they usually undercut the comparison site.

Play hardball with IAM Surety, it's necessary from time to time.

Thanks for that, I may try that next year, couldn't be bothered last year, so took my custom elsewhere.

£382 for both my Primera & wife's Clio, both fully comp and with business usage, both parked in driveway - so that's about £190 per car. With Admiral for 2nd year, they were significantly cheaper on the renewal than they were the previous year, when I was a new client.
