Any - Taxing a car - Dabooka

Hello, after an answer to a simple query.

I'm picking a car up on Saturday which is currently on a SORN and wonder what I'll need to do on the day to get it taxed. A simple question I know but I've never needed to tax a new (to me) car in this manner before.

V5 is all present and correct and will be signed over to me on the day, but the online tax system won't know it's mine at that stage so how does this work?

Take the V5 into a post office. They'll tax it for you and deal with the change of keeper at the same time.

I've no idea, sorry.

You can tax it online even if you're the new keeper, according to this :

www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-without-v11-reminder

Basically, you give the 12 digit number off the 'new keeper slip', rather than the 11 digit number off the V5

As above, just go to dvla.gov.uk - click that you have the V5C/2 and put the reference number in. It will realise you are the new keeper and won't cancel the tax when it goes into your name.

Simple.

I at least appear to have options now, especially if the PO is shut (got to pass the MOT first....)

Oh no, it's mine regardless. :-)

However it's being given to me by my father in law post his retirement (MOT expired in May, been on a SORN in the garage since) . It's also to be a third car alongside my daily and that of my wife.

Plan is to get MOT, which touchwood should be fine, tax and insure and I'll drive it back up North from Derbyshire. I think it's in Derbyshire, county boundaries around those parts are not a strength.

You'll need to insure it before you take it on the road and insurance will be necessary before it's taxed.

Thanks To my, insurance is indeed lined up with tax happening tomorrow evening now I know how to do it online. MOT booked already too.

Must say, surprised how expensive the insurance is with so called multi car

Seriously it's a marketing gimmick to allow them to charge higher prices

As well as the legal side, if the car has been SORN for several months, you may need to check the battery is OK and put some wind in the tyres :-)

Yes, utter gimmick as even our two normal policies which are supposedly on the same policy aren't at all. We have two policies, two accounts and two premiums. I somewhat optimistically assumed this additional car would 'slot' onto my policy but it seems not. A couple of calls needed methinks.

Re: Battery

Yes, it's flat. New unit but allowed to trickle down so charger packed along with compressor for tyres and gaffer tape, WD40 and a hammer so pretty much covered all bases there. What could possibly go wrong?!

Made me laugh anyway - I think we're at the same level of expertise! (I was actually using a hammer on my gear lever knob the other day - no joy, but a bit of Araldite seems to have fixed it...)
