Anyone suggest an insurer that covers use on airfields?

I'm retired and am considering volunteering at my local air museum. This entails driving onto the airfield past the hangars, but no airside activity.

I can't find an insurer that will cover me for this and wonder how many people are uninsured when they visit the site for airshows.

There's also a private road across the runway the public have access to. That seems to be a definite no-no for insurance.

There is a driver training outfit at Tockwth in Yorkshire where years ago I went for skid pan training. At that time it was possible to teach children under 17 to drive on the runways there, not sure if that is still the case, but if you ask they may tell you which insurer they use for their activities. I believe there is a similar training faclity at Elvington, people have used Elvington for speed record attempts, so advice may be available from the officials there.

Broker? Suspect areas that are publicly accessible on display days would be covered as public land. It's not sort of stuff average CSA at LV or wherever will give a definitive answer on.

For many years I was involved in a business in which I would often drive airside. On the internal roads of the main airports eg Heathrow I was on my own, but if I drove on to the apron it was allways in the company of an escorting vehicle.

I had standard business car insurance.

The question you are asking will not get a definative response from any standard insurer

Are others using vehicles on the airfield?

Could you not ask them how they arrange cover?

My policy excludes cover while the vehicle is parked or is being driven in any part of an airport or airfield set aside for:

Moving, taking off or landing of aircraft;

Aircraft parking areas and associated roads, and

Ground equipment parking, maintenance and refuelling areas;

Customs examination areas of passenger terminals.

Does “driving past the hangars” mean you will be driving in an area set aside for any of the above? Or will you be only using roads to which aircraft have no access?

The access road is past the hangars. Aircraft are moved across it (manhandled or towed) to airside. Engines are only run airside.

I guess that counts as an area for "moving of aircraft" though it could be argued that it is not an areas "set aside" for that purpose. Have you looked at your current policy's exclusion wording? The trouble is that if you make a verbal enquiry and get the OK from some bod in a call centre, when your car is written off by a Land Rover towing a Spitfire across the road, they might argue the toss.

I think the restrictions may be more to do with the potential risk of writing off a million pound and otherwise irreplaceable Spitfire than than the family hatchback.

I have just checked my current policy, which includes business use, with Aviva and there is no exclusion related to airports/airfields

Thanks Palcouk, I'll try them next.

Palcouk. Careful perusal shows the following on Aviva policies that excludes me I think:

Exclusions to Section 2
We
will not pay for:(5)
loss, damage, death or injury while any motor vehicle is being used on:
(a)
that part of an aerodrome or airport used for aircraft taking off or landing,
(b)
aircraft parking areas including service roads,
(c)
ground equipment parking areas, or
