BMW 1 Series - NIP didn't stop or report - Red422

Bumped a car in supermarket car park, only a tiny scratch on my car. I know it is no excuse but I panicked and drove off and haven't reported to police. There was a passenger in the other car. How likely are they to report to police? Do people more often than not report or not bother? The car park has no CCTV and to my knowledge was no witnesses. I am fully expecting a NIP to come however and will own up for my actions, I have heard they police can prosecute for up to six months after, is the NIP likely to arrive i the next week or so or will it take a while to arrive - what is the average time for a NIP to come in these circumstances (I am registered keeper of the car). I'm not sure you could know there was no CCTV unless you stopped and had a really good look - cameras are not that obvious, necessarily. And there was a witness, according to your post - a passenger in the car you hit.

I believe the six months limit applies to most motoring offences, but if the collision is recent (it sounds as if it is) and you're prepared to take it on the chin, why not put yourself out of your misery by reporting it yourself? (Or are you hoping it will all go away?)

I live in the area and know the car park has no cameras as people are campaigning to get some put on that car park as there is a lot of trouble with antisocil behaviour from youths. Could I report it to the police now, three days later? Or could I still be served a NIP for failing to report as I didn't reprt within 24 hours?

There is no requirement on the police to send a NIP in such a case, thus no maximum time for one to be sent.

If prosecuted, the penalty for a minor accident and failing to stop is the lower end - 5-6 points and a fine.

I'd report it to the police myself - especially if there was a witness in the other car. Not doing so and hoping it'll go away could end up being a really stupid move.

EDIT : explain that you didn't notice the damage until today. That is an acceptable excuse for late reporting.

Note that in law you MUST report it within 24 hours of noticing that damage.

Will I be ok reporting it after three days - happened on Thursday - doesn't it have to be within 24 hours?

So why do you think the passenger in the other car wouldn't qualify as a witness?

Is failure to stop and/or report an accident a 'nippable' offence. I would have thought a Police visit would have been more likely had it been reported

As has already been mentioned, no NIP is required for an allegation of failing to stop/report.
