Renault Clio II - Clio 04 1.2 8v starts turning over then stops dead - Matthew Broomfield

Hi my clio 2004 1.2 8v starts turning over then stops dead after 3-5 turns.

I bought this car as a non runner with a snapped cambelt. I have since replaced the valves, rebuilt the engine and replaced the cambelt and tensioner.

when I turn the engine over it stops dead after 3-5, I have double checked the timing and that's stop on, if I unplug the ignition coil the engine is happy to continuously turn over. The immobiliser red light goes out like normal, I have tried to plug in with my reader but it is unable to connect to the ecu.

I am not sure where to start is it a sensor, earth or mechanical.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks matt

Are you aware that No1 cylinder is at the flywheel end of the engine?

You might want to check your cam timing again.

I would manually turn the cam shaft over by hand for over 5 rotations,
to see if it's something physically stopping it from turning.

Is there a "clunk" when it stops turning over?
does it sound like something is hitting something ...

could it be the cam shaft rockers, up top,
set wrong and messing with the vales positions.

& are the valves going up and down freely ?
ie not sticking at all

Cheers
Liam.
oh ! ps when I swapped a valve in mine
I got it from a major parts place, and they gave me the wrong valve.
It was only by comparing it to the one that came out, I could see it was longer, and had a wider diameter...
woth checking that they've given you the right size valves?

Renault Clio II - Clio 04 1.2 8v starts turning over then stops dead - hardway

If it spins over when the coilis off then the rotating mechanics have to be fine,

But as Focused states cyl#1 is at the gear box end so i might be you've timed it up from the crank pully end,

Essentially Cyl#4.

Check that first.

Thanks for your replys,

For the timing, I use the drill bit in the fly wheel just under the starting motor and the timing mark on the camshaft pulley with the mark on the Rocker cover. I am happy it's timed ok.

I did found out the hard way where no1 was lol.

It's only when it goes to fire up it stop with a click, it's sounds like the starting motor.

I will double check the valve gaps hopefully I have not left enough gap.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replys, Justin updated, car is running perfectly and it was due the valve clearance not being set right and the valves be open all the time. Thanks again

Is it possible the camshaft has been turned one full circle when off the engine ?

maybe a screwdriver/pencil etc , down a piston would reveal if it's tdc,
(by turning the crankshaft by hand)
when the camshaft thinks it is...
