N/A - French City Pollution Lille Crit’Air - HELP NEEDED - mickeybay

Does anyone understand the new French laws for Air Quality Control, Crit’Air - specifically Lille.

I have looked at the website in French (but my French is schoolboy) and English.

There appears to be two zones, ZPA and ZCR. The ZCR is supposedly the centre and the ZPA the outer metropolitan area.

However, the map shows the zones as identical.

I think that the ZCR is permanent and the ZPA has to be declared when pollution has exceeded limits on 2 consecutive days. Is that correct?

The ZPA site says this,

The following highways are located inside the environmental zone: Highway A25 (from Dunkerque) and the A22 (from Lille and toward Ghent); the A27 (from Lille to Brussels) as well as the A1 (in direction of Paris) and the A23 (in direction of Valenciennes).
It is of particular importance to note that most of the traffic coming from Brussels or Ghent mostly goes towards the Calais tunnel through the highways A25 and A27, thus having to cross the ZPA zone of Lille.
Excluded from potential alarms are the highways A1, A22, A25.

So, it seems I can drive on the motorway A25 and A5 and A23 (which is the E42 from Calais) towards Belgium without needing a sticker. Is that true, since the seemingly identical ZCR website does not mention the exclusion of that route?

Why not just buy a vignette? Then if you happen to stray into an area where you need one you are covered.

It's not like they are expensive for an EU vehicle not registered in France, they cost €4.80 despatched to the address on the vehicle registration card - (V5).

You have to send an image of the UK V5 as an attachment to your application.

(just right-click and click translate if you don't read French)

Yes, that would be the simplest thing. It can join the separate German one which I need to pay for to enter some German cities. I have no doubt other European countries will soon follow, each with their own sticker, and all at reasonable cost.

I hope that I can still see out of the windscreen :-)

However, since I do not intend to enter any of the affected cities, I would like to know if there is a need.

The Critair scheme started in areas of Paris and Lyon but is expanding. I bought one to be on the safe side as my Tomtom has diverted me some strange ways through Paris to avoid traffic. It's cheap and arrives fairly quickly. The hardest bit is getting a scan of your v5 small enough to send.

This is astonishing! I live in Lille and I hadn't realised that there will (or may) be 2 zones.

The ZCR is still under discussion but the ZPA is operational when the pollution level requires it. If you stay on the motorways which ring Lille, you are OK, even if the motorway goes through one of the 12 communes in the list - Ronchin for example. If you go off the motorway into one of the communes on these days, you might find yourself in trouble.

I think it would still be best to get the sticker.

It strikes me as rather strange (and it is beginning to become infuriating) that France and Germany (and Spain before too long) are each going their own merry way with pollution stickers. Surely the EU can get its act together and set up ONE system for ALL member states (and soon-to-be ex-member states) as they did with blue badges - or am I missing something? A simple, standardised "EU6" sticker, or whatever, in the windscreen as of date "x" isn't rocket science. Exemption for GB and Ireland as the vehicle's year of registration is there on the number plate (year stickers compulsory for those sporting "look at me! "plates, hah!) Confiscation of car and 7 days' prison for anyone using a forged or stolen sticker and voilà, problem solved.

What ! Harmonisation of environmental (city traffic) policies for all countries in EU will take decades, be on the safe side and apply for whatever crit air (or equivalent) vignettes apply for each member country where applicable, the process is easy and quick. The vignettes are registration specific and will last the lifetime of the vehicle, i have a screen full. I have had reported that some vehicles entering Germany that do not display a vignette have been taken advantage of by bogus traffic police who have conned fines for just crossing into the republic. One vignette for each member country will cover a vehicle for wherever you travel in each state/region i.e for Germany each region has its own designated traffic enviro restricted zones

Thanks Mch.

I will probably get the sticker, but if this carries on, anyone driving to say, Italy, might need stickers for:

France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, and Italy

A minor diversion will also end up needing Lichtenstein, Switzerland, and Luxembourg as well.

That is 9 stickers! 9 applications to different places. 9 payments probably, even if small.

And once we have accepted all of that, the price will be increased and the stickers will only be valid for one year.

If we do not complain, we will be stickered into oblivion. :-)

Before anyone tells me, I know, I know, "Do a staycation".
