I seem to remember reading a list of the top 10 least reliable cars, may well have been on this site(?), and 4 or 5 of them were made by Landrover. That would be enough to put me off!. If it was my money, I'd be looking at something made in Japan or Korea.
Does she need the 7 seats?

Son has a new one V6 3 ltr petrol, 7 seater.
In last week's heat the spoiler at the back fell off onto the ground, the following car drove over it. Back to the dealer with the 2 week old car - they knew of the issue & fixed it with no issues on it being warranty.
On the way back from the LR garage the glass roof on their 430i exploded on the motorway. The shade was closed so none of the debris entered the car - car is still in the garage - new sunroof, respray of roof, boot lid & spoiler. BMW dealer said it was the heat (110 deg F) so was not that keen to own up - BMW warranty reluctantly agreed to pay - the car is 2 weeks short of 3 years old ....10 days on still with an X3 loan car, sunroofs apparently in short supply.

Discovery Sport was launched 2 years ago to replace Freelander 2, the early models used the Ford-PSA 2.2 diesel and the later ones the 2.0 Ingenium diesel.
I presume Falkirk Bairn's son has a Discovery 5, not a Discovery Sport - quite different models.

I don't think that is a discovery sport?, as far as i am aware, the only petrol ones are 2.0 turbo with 240BHP

Ah, not a V6 - it's the Volvo SI6 inline transverse engine derived from their '90s B4/B5/B6 engines and built by Ford at Bridgend as no longer used by Volvo.

Your daughter is presumably going to be looking at diesel, as with that type of car at that age, there are not many petrol options. With that in mind, you need to be very wary of dpf issues, i'm sure others will be along to give more detail in that respect. A 3 or 4 year old diesel SUV could be asking for trouble though, and maybe thinking about petrol powered cars which could do what she need's out of a car?.
But, if it has to be an SUV, and has to have 7 seats, i'd be thinking about a hyundai santa fe (2012>) or kia sorento (2010-2015). If she doesn't need the 7 seats (but it has to be an SUV), you could add in the honda CR-V, toyota RAV4, mazda CX-5.
If it doesn't need to be an SUV, then (petrol engined with 7ish seats) possibilities are, ford galaxy or s max, toyota verso, VW touran, kia carens, mazda 5, etc. The beauty of one of these, is that your daughter will get a much newer, possibly brand new, car for the same money.

I think this one is going to depend on whether Barney's daughter is into image or not. If it were me, I'd be going for one of Badbusdriver's suggestions (although if the budget allowed, it would be a Skoda Kodiaq in front of any of them).
But although a used diesel Discovery is likely to be a money-pit, don't be surprised if she still wants one.

I have an agricultural business in rural NW Russia, I do between 150,000 - 180,000 Ks a year, myself nd my partner both run Landcruisers we keep them up to 350,000 miles, then trade in. We do a lot of highway miles but we travel on a lot of dirt roads, that would be considered as serious offroading, in mud, snow and ice. We have never been let down. outside of normal servicing and things such as broken headlamp lens or windscreen.
Here they say that Landrovers are only for the local mafia boses as they dont care what they spend on their vehicles. I know of a business associate who has an Overfinch Range Rover bought new March this year, he ha done under 2,000 ks as it has been off the road due to a string of major problems, fully spec'd over 210,000 Euros.

I've read stuff like that before!. In places like Africa and Australia, when a broken down car could cost your life, they don't use Landrover's, they use Toyota landcruiser's or Nissan patrol's.
Probably safe to say the OP's daughter is unlikely to be in a situation like that!
