I have recently looked into renewing my tax and insurance having had my car for a full year. I bought the car second hand from a dealership. I have now noticed the v5 is not in my name, and the previous owner has not signed the part I need to send away. I have no idea what to do now, a little worried the car has been insured and taxed to myself for a year when its technically not even registered to me. what on earth can i do to sort this problem out without getting myself into any kind of bother? any help or advice is very much appreciated

Have you got the whole 2 page doc, not just the V5C New keeper's supplement?

If so, just fill in the change of keep part on the left, pug a squiggle in the signature box, send it off, and job's a good un.

Thats my current plan A . i was just worried they will see some kind of discrepency in the fact ive had it a full year. do you think they will notice?

How did the V5 make it to your address if it's not been registered to you? Do you mean your name is wrong on it but the address is correct?

the dealer gave me the v5. it has never been sent away in order to be returned.

The dealer should never have just handed you the old V5, it was his responsibility to fill it in and send it off.

As already said, just fill in your details and current date (avoids any questions), sign your part and sign the previous owners declaration with a squiggle then send off. The docs will land on your door with no questions asked within a fourtnight.

Fill in the new keeper details, scribble some illegible signature into the 'old keeper' box, and post it to DVLA.

Whilst technically you've committed an offence, DVLA have got far easier fish to go for. I'd rate your chances of getting into trouble as close to zero.

My sister did the same a few years ago. Sent the V5 into DVLA after a year, along with a apologetic letter. Got the new V5 back a few days later, and never heard any more of it.

When you bought the vehicle, did you tax it? To have done that it would have needed insurance in your name AND you as the registered owner to have taxed online or the full v5c to have taxed at a post office. The dealer would have done the change of ownership online or the post office would retain the v5c

The insurance is checked electronically in any case!

Hopefully you have not been running around uninsured and untaxed and without an MOT.

you can check if you are insured online and the same for tax.

Google check MOT www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

check tax vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

check insurance... ownvehicle.askmid.com/

if they all show up correct you should be ok...

Inurance has not been checked since about 2012. It doesn't say it is on the site either. They abolished it as a waste of time as people simply insured a car for 24 hours then cancelled.

You can easily tax a car using the doc ref without changing the name. It can be done at the same time, but does not have to be. They key is you must use a 12 digit number rather than 11 otherwise the tax will cancel when the name change finally happens.

Which leaves me with a question, is it just done to"encourage" people to forget and then get fined?
