Hi All,

On Tuesday of this week I was involved in an accident; a driver of another car decided he wanted to be in my lane despite there being no where for him to go.

The accident was caught on dash-cam so the other parties insurers have already accepted liability.

I reported the accident via my insurers who so far have been helpful; however they have now passed me on to an accident management company as I though it would be easier to use their 'approved' repairer rather than sourcing my own.

However I am now being asked to enter in to credit agreements and other policies etc; is this the normal way of these things happening?

Also the bodyshop they've put me in to contact with expect me to take my car to them to be 'assessed' in my own time and then book it in and again take it back to them to be repaired; apparently they'll get the hire car delivered to them?! Does any one agree with me that this seems wrong? Especially as it seems that I have to go out of my way in my own time to get damage rectified caused by a negligent third party.

Don't enter into any sort of credit agreement with them. This is in case your insurer doesn't foot any obscene hire car or claim management bills etc. The debt would then land at your feet. Tell them you want to deal directly with your insurer, there's no requirement for a claims management firm to be involved or for you to take any risk.

They will welcome you coming to them directly & should make life a lot easier

re hire car etc - ask them to cover hire costs & insurance for hire period - avoiding you paing CDW waiver fees.

Am I allowed to deal with the 3rd party insurer? I assume this won't affect the decision that they've admitted liability?

I certainly don't want them to write my car off or give them the opportunity to; which is a 2008 Kia Cee'd.

is the right answer, if the third party's insurer are switched on they will bend over backwards to make your life as easy as possible, they will probably deliver a suitable courtesy car to your door when they collect yours and the other way round once repaired, and the repair time will be far quicker.

Agree with previous posts. In my experience it is better to deal directly with insurers. I remember once with legal aid the solicitors took twice as long as I would have done. At least they did give me compensation for delay.

I was drawn into an expensive car hire but managed to get rid in a few days when I found out my potential liabilities.

I assume this won't cause any issues with me reporting the claim via my own insurance company?

I've not agreed to the credit hire or anything yet with the AMC and I definitely won't after reading the terms and conditions.

If the third party insurer are going to play ball with you, ie collect and return your car and leave you a suitable free courtesy car for the duration, then all you have to do is inform your insurer of the facts as a non claim fault free accident.

They possibly won't like you dealing direct with the other side because it might scotch any juicy referral fees lurking about from a set of accident management bods, and you may well find they increase your premiums at renewal time, many companies do despite the accident being fault free, but view that as a chance to find a possibly better insurer/premium anyway.

I thought these AMCs were owned by the insurers and are used to maximise profit at the expense of their customers.

Hi

I was also involved in a recent accident recently, I was hit from behind which in turn shunted me into a van in front. My car is a write off and i sustained injury to chest and neck.

Even though I had car hire via my insurance they directed me to one of these company's who they said would give me like for like car rather than a smaller one.

They contacted me but I had done some research on these company's and read a lot of the small print of agreement documents they sent to me.

The part that says credit hire agreement done it for me so I declined there service and told my insurance I want the car hire from them which I pay them for.

They will give cars that are not needed, at a very high cost per day etc and say they charge the at fault person. However as some have said this can be challenged and you could end up with thousands of pounds of debt.

I'm so glad I declined as I am now told that the person who hit me is claiming he it me because I hit the van in front first !!! This is totally untrue as I was stationary at traffic lights.

If I had accepted the the car from the other company I would now be facing paying back loads of money even if they said we were both at fault.

It's shocking that the insurance company's that we pay encourage us to go via these company's . They get paid a percentage for any referrals they make to these people !!!!

Always go via your insurance

Correct, or more accurately at the expense of the other insurance companies. But since they all do it to each other, and the costs ultmately have to be recovered from premiums, it just puts up insurance costs.

It isn't just the expensive hire cars either. They effectively solicit personal injury claims, principally whiplash.

We (I and the boss) have each had a non-fault accident in recent years. In both cases, as liability was either obvious or admitted, we contacted the other party's insurer who were happy to provide a hire car without risk to us and to use our nominated repairer. We never even had to fill a form in.

So as an update I rang Admiral and they did bite my hand off when I mentioned I mentioned I was being offered credit hire by my own insurance company.

Their approved repairer has picked up my car and I've even got a hire car provided via Enterprise.

Was much easier to deal with them than I thought it would be.

Really can't wait to get my Cee'd back though!
