VW Up - VW Up alternator belt change - Leif

I need to change the alternator belt on my VW Up. It wasn't done by the dealer at the service as they had no belts in stock. Someone kindly gave me a diagram of the belt arrangement on the Up, and how to change it:

Has anyone here done this? I am concerned that getting into the engine bay will be hard as it looks cramped. So although in principle it is easy, it might be tricky in practice.

Why do you need to change it? These have a service life of at least 100k miles under normal conditions.

I've done 105K miles, and it is frayed.

Must be the highest mileage UP! On the road. How reliable has it been to date? It's not often we see a city car with such a heavy mileage.

Not too difficult to change .You need a long breaker bar and a a good fitting socket,or a long spanner with not too much off-set.

Thanks. I'll fiddle around first, see if I can get my fingers into the compartment and give it a go if I think I can. Otherwise, do Halfords, Kwiq Fit el al do this sort of work? VW want £100 which is steep for a simple job.

It has been very reliable. I had the front brake disks changed at about 80,000 miles. It has the original clutch, though that is more to do with driving style. I did have a problem with some Kumho KH27 tyres which were dangerous, and removed after a month.

The only non service work was my fault, I drove over a fallen conifer tree when parking. It was in a nature reserve car park, and the dark trunk blended into the road surface. It did a lot of damage even though I was going slowly, as it just went under the car, but brushed the radiator and broke the radiator support, and damaged the heat shield.

It's good to hear from someone who's really tested one of these wee cars. I like the UP/Citigo/Mii and often recommend them but longterm durability was still a question mark. Looks like they'll prove very robust over time.

I've only fiddled around under the bonnet, changing a bulb for example, but my impression is that they designed everything from the ground up and in a very nice way. These days I think cars tend to be reliable due to robotic production methods, and the Up is a fairly basic car without sophisticated electrics. Mine has manual window winders for example. The only problem I've had with a small car was an old style Micra, which rusted after 10 years. The Up looks to have very good underbody anti-corrosion paint, and a quite long body work guarantee albeit with the usual caveats.
