Mondeo Skoda Octavia/Superb Passat Jetta - Best Engine and Car for Taxi - pogo
Looking for some advice re best Engine re Taxi. Last car was Ford Mondeo 2009 2.0tdci Zetec. Cam shaft rocker broke at 218000. Looking/needing a new Taxi. Help re best car. Bad publicity re Skoda and Vw re Egrs blocking after fix. Help.

What's your budget? Do you want to buy new or used? Are you doing mostly short stop start driving or will there be plenty of distance work? What local authority regulations apply, as in age car can be when registered as a taxi and age it must come off plus any stipulation they make on engine size?

12k maximum with 2.0 engine. Open to suggestions. Would prefer 2014 but would not rule out 2013 or 2015/16

Pre-facelift Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4-D? The later cars use BMW 1.6 and 2.0 motors which don't have the best reputation for longevity but the final 2.0 Toyota unit is well sorted and capable of 250k upwards with care.

Loads of room, well made in the U.K, safe, softer suspension than most and you'll always find a buyer for an old Toyota diesel especially an estate no matter the mileage so it'll have some value rather than none when you're done with it.

THE Auris Hybrid estate is available at this money too if you do a lot of short local running and the running gear on these has been tested to destruction by taxi fleets accross the globe. Not as good on fuel over longer distances though but there's no DPF or DMF to worry about. I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Cheers for the suggestions. Some nice cars. What about the Mazda 2.2 engine as well? Just a few went at auction today for £9400. Massive car and loaded with toys ex Fleet. If you were to rate in order would you put Toyota first? Always bought Ford but open to advice. Cheers

Mazda with the 2.2 diesel ?

A considerable number of major engine failures. The engine has a pickup strainer in the sump. That gets clogged, the oil doesn't get pumped round the engine, the engine goes BANG.

Cheers Rob. So stay away from that one then -its was 2.2 engine. So Toyota decent - what's better engine 1.6 or 2.0 -what about Skoda VW Ford or Vauxhall and what's the pit falls. The 1.9 Skoda engine was bullet proof but then they add Dpf etc. Cheers in advance for help.

The taxi trade still swear by the VAG 1.6/2.0 diesels but anything affected by the emissions fix is much more prone to EGR and likely DPF issues than before so I'd stick to cars registered in 2016 or later but check before you buy that it's not a 2014/early 2015 model which will have been part of the recall.

Forget anything running PSA's now notorious 1.6 diesel, it's not fit for use and won't stand up to your mileage. This rules out most Mondeos though the 2.0 is better.

Ditto Mazda's troublesome 2.2 skyactiv diesels. These are well known for early failure and best avoided. Shame because the cars themselves are great.

No shortage of choice up here as later big as your not in the middle of nowhere. Arnold Clark have lived ads of late plate stock in your price range.

Usually you can - I've edited posts as much as 30 minutes after posting. But if someone else replies to the thread, your window closes instantly. That's my understanding, anyway.

Why don't you go for another 2.0 diesel (manual) Mondeo ?

local small taxi firm by uses them, same engine in the Kuga and the Mondeo that they run and like your Mondeo was up at well over 200k last time I used them.

If your buget is 12k then you should be easily able to get one for c. £8.5k, even if you have to travel down south to Northern England.

Gives you some ££ left over for running repairs and you know what to look for....

I'd be interested to know what you buy, if you haven't already bought something and how it pans out....
