Nobody can tell you how much it will cost to repair.

If it needs adjustment, then it could cost £20 or less.

If you need new discs, pads and shoes, a new handbrake cable, along with all the labour, then it could be more like £200, or even more.

I would guess most of your cost will be labour, so it depends how long the job takes. I have no knowledge of Micra details, but it sounds like a new brake cable may be required, which may solve all 3 faults. Cable shouldn't be too expensive. If the binding means the drums have to come off, that will take rather longer - more dismantling, and on a 17-year-old car could be awkward, but most mechanics will be used to it.

Rob, I doubt that many 2000 Micras have rear disc brakes ?

Although, I know nothing about cars , but a family friend took it in for me and they usually fix any problems. They said its not a big problem and that they only needed to replace the brake shoes. I was wondering how much it would cost to replace just the brake shoes.

thank you

Probably not, no. More likely to be drum.

More than likley the rear drums have never been of and the cable mal adjusted.

Usually fixed by new shoes (1 hours labour) and if really bad new cable and self adjusters.

So being wildly pessamisitc it would be less the £150.

Sounds as though the n/s piston has seized. If there's a fair bit of wear left on the shoe it might cost you nothing. Take it apart and brush it all clean. Free-up (might need a tap), remove and clean the piston.. Clean the corroded bit of the cylinder with a drop of brasso, lightly sandpaper the glaze on the shoe, carefully lubricate the contact areas where things move - not the braking surfaces obviously - and the handbrake cable, reassemble, bleed - and it should work again. Might need a new piston seal if there's a leak. Don't know about Nissans but my TR7 rear brakes lasted over 25yrs before they needed replacement.

Assuming this is the full failure text, then there's nothing about service brake failure, so my guess would be it just needs a new handbrake cable, or the operating lever for the handbrake on the shoes has seized in the on position - had that a long time ago, took the shoe off, hammered a punch into the rivet to free it up, and away we went!
