M6 Toll sold to Australian pension fund - RT

The M6 Toll has been sold for an undisclosed sum to IFM Investments, and Australian Pension Fund.

Highways England may get a £180 million payment if the Land Trust is paid off.

Reports that the toll is now expected to make a profit, something it's never done, may indicate it's been sold for a very low price.

That road should have been purchased by the govt for the nation and made a free road, it would take a good 30% of traffic off relieving the whole of the B'ham motorway area.

The original asking price of £1.9 billion was too high - by nearly £2 billion, especially as the government gets it back for free in 27 years time when the 50 year lease expires

Anyone wonder what the gridlock wll be like across Brum in ten years let alone 27 when the road is worn out and needs digging up, maybe we could have borrowed some of the this £billions of our (taxpayer's, not the govt's) money being grabbed without consent and sent to various corrupt regimes under the illusion of foreign aid.

The elevated sections of M5 and M6 round Birmingham are already time-expired and need demolition and rebuild - but they'll have to be patched until the government can afford to upgrade the A50 to 4-lane motorway, and build the Wolverhampton western and Stoke-on-Trent eastern motorways - all three being necessary to avoid isolating the south from the rest of the UK.

There is an automatic right to extend a lease, unless there are good reasons to object to a new agreement, or they company don't want a new lease, it will cost serious money to buy out the company lease.

At least users have the option to use the free M6 route.

As a resident of south Liverpool and a very regular user of the Runcorn - Widnes bridge, my right to a free crossing will be shortly curtailed with the opening of the new tolled crossing. The existing bridge will be refurbished and re-opened with a toll. This is completely scandalous. I cannot find any history of such a rip-off occurring, but hey-ho the soth-east has £Billions spent in "free" infrastructure.

The crazy thing is that the congestion going south in the morning has more of less disappeared due the construction!

I don't think the Dartford Crossing Toll, London Congestion Charge or the London Low Emissions Zone can be classified as "free" infrastructure.

It's "local" politicians who decide where local charges are levied - Scotland has spent big chunks of it's Barnett Formula block grant on buying back toll bridges to make them free, dualling the A9 as a vanity project and buying back NHS car parks so they're free.

Look to Merseyside politicians, not London.

Nothing to do with Merseyside politicians AFAIK and my beef is that the EXISTING free crossing will be tolled, this is the equivalent of tolling the M6 through Birmingham.

I blame George Osborne :)

Tolls on both the Silver Jubilee Bridge and Merseyside Gateway are under local authority control, not Highways England.

The M6 is Highways England, not Birmingham City Corporation.

Does the HJ forum have a naughty step for me RT?

The Merseyside Gateway is a cooperation between abutting/nearby Councils and a range of other organisations including National Govt (via the former Gove Office for NW). Tolls may well have been a condition of funding.

I still blame George Osborne :-)

I blame Scrooge McDuck...there I think we got it covered.

Large parts of Europe charge tolls across some or all of their networks.

Given that motorists in this country are such an easy target - all vehicles and drivers are registered - it is surprising that further exploitation by the government has been limited.

So I think we are living on borrowed time. Avaricious governments have backed themselves into a corner by promising no increases in VAT, PAYE, NI etc.

The only option is to raise taxes on things they haven't excluded. Road pricing would be easy to implement technically, could generate significant income, potentially allow vehicle tracking to combat terrorism, setrious crime, inform insurance premiums, identify other offences - eg: speeding.

It is just a question of when they feel they may politically get away with it.

That's the time when we give up driving and use a rental autonomous vehicle.

Anti terror is the excuse they'll trot out and i suspect sooner than we think, it won't make a scrap of difference to tracking terrorists (most of ours were reported already but no one bothered to do anything, why should they? they don't get sacked nor lose their golden pensions paid by us), but it's an excellent tool to electronically spy on the other 60/70 million who don't kill with vehicles knives guns or explosives.

AFAIK, it was Osborne (or at least some other minister in the Coalition Gov't) who stated words to the effect of "if you don't want tolls, it won't get built"..............

Building major additional road capacity should be compared to HS2 using similar criteria - journey times, capacity constraints and other methidology.

It may be interesting to see whether HS2 stands up to this comparison or whether (as I expect) it is an almost complete waste of taxpayer funds.

Every time I use the M6 toll, it's near enough empty of all other traffic. It could be single lane in each direction and cope quite happily with the volumes it gets. I usually use this when my satnav tells me the M6/M5 interchange is a nightmare, which it nearly always is.

This road should be free and will allow proper maintenance to the M6/M5 interchange.

How very short-sighted to sell it off to a private foreign investment organisation.
