Hond civic 2005 - Auto Gearbox failure - Daniel Marshall

Hi everyone. Our car was sat at some lights, on pulling away there was a grinding noise and then it wouldn't move. On getting it recovered i tested it, my wife was driving when it boke down. I could start it, no problems, it would rev in neutral to what seemd to be normal levels. When i shifted it into D there was clanking sounds and grinding. No movement with the handbrake off. You can then not return it anyother gear, unless it is turned off. R just has grinding soun as does the 1,2, 3 gears. Could you just confirm that it is indeed the gearbox?

I've tried looking for salvage boxes, but i'm also wondering if any other models in the civic range share the same gearbox? They are tricky to find under 90k miles.

Thanks in advance.

I would get the underside inspected, just in case it is a driveshaft issue, rather than gearbox.

I'll second the above just in case - I have seen driveshaft spline failure before on a Ford Zodiac IV (yup a while ago!) . Reported as "making funny noises and the clutch is slipping" - I investigated and realised the propshaft was turning after you dropped the clutch - followed further back and saw one rear halfshaft still turning as well - looked at rear wheel the the driveshaft nut was turning but obviously the wheel wasn't

It's worth a look - probably gearbox though

Well done you clever clogs. It was indeed the driveshaft. It had snapped and wasn't connected to the wheel anymore. Bit cheaper than fixing a gearbox!

Blimey - that's a bad failure - better than a new gearbox though!

With that sort of failure fit a new shaft

Yes, it was pretty servere. When it was off there was an obvious weak spot. Rusted and fatigued. When we felt under the wheel after rolling it off the lorry the rubber boot came off in the hand and the shaft was flopping on its own. It appeared that when we tried to start it up it wouldn't go back into Neutral as the gearbox was still tring to engage. Can't thank you all enough, a good shout.
