mazda 6 Takuya - Car power loss, accelerating = stuttering. - MazdaManOrNot

So I just bought a 2011 2nd hand mazda takuya (privatly bought). I was driving it back home and everything was going great, until I got about 60miles into the trip, then the car seemed to lose power. If I accelerated the reves would go up, so I dont think the engine is losing power, and the car would judder but not stall. I managed to coast it into the layby in neutural with the engine still running. Turned the engine off and tried again. It would then struggle to turn over a couple times but evenataully work after a minutes rest. I was able to nurse it to a garage (still 50miles from home) in which it did the same thing a couple more times. They ran a diagnostic, in which I believe a few of these are irrelevant to the problem above, maybe all, but I'll put them up anyway:

B1128 - Driverside - Side inflatable deployment control circuit open. DTC warning light. (some scumbag removed the airbag warning light to pass MOT, so need a new bag)

B1011 - ECU supplied power output incorrect assembly or it it "SAS control module connectors are poorly connected"?

nema.club/2014wsm/workshop%20manual/n6w08/html/id0...l

B1193 - Crash event storage - Full andd loaded(body control module)

V30003 - Battery voltage circuit voltage below threshold.

So I got a new battery installed as the meter gave a bad reading, the mechanic said it's probably not causing the problem, and I managed to nurse it home with it only happening again once in my home town.

So I have a few theories, im no mechanic but from the diagnostic it seems someone tampered with the SAS control module and set off the bag, hence B1193 and B1128 and possibly B1011.

I wonder if it could be a heating problem with it only happening after 50miles or so, with it cooling down while at the garage but I wouldnt be able to guess what part is failing. I also wonder if the diagnostic was able to pick up the problem? I have no idea how they work.

Sorry it's a bit lengthy, I've tried to be as clear as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. once in my home town and it happened again, I didnt rush to get it on the side of the road, so when it happened again I did try accelerating and it stuttered a little bit so I stopped accelerating and just let it roll, after a few seconds it seemed to pick back up again and was back to normal.

Moved to Technical.

Is this a petrol or diesel engine? I suspect diesel, as the petrol engines in Mazdas are usually very reliable.

Ah no its a petrol im afraid

Just to get this out of the way is there "any" oil in the sump?

mazda 6 Takuya - Car power loss, accelerating = stuttering. - MazdaManOrNot

I've just had to look this up. It had a service at the start of the year, and had an oil change and filter so doubt it would be this. It was also sorn for a couple weeks before buying and I didnt notice any leaks but I will check if there is any in there when I can. It seems the engine is getting power, hence the revs, but the car itself isnt. So I wonder if its to do with the clutch?

Symptoms could be the engine siezing up from lack of oil but like I suggested the oil level is easy to check.

Also symptoms could be lack of battery charge so check the alternator output.

Battery circuit Voltage low concerns me.

Clutch is an easy test.

Hand brake fully on and then try to pull away in first.

On a good clutch the engine will stall out,

Bad clutch and it won't stall.

Ok so the battery was changed but yes could be the alternator.

I tried the clutch test in 1st and 4th and stall on each, but I worry somthing could be dripping onto the clutch to make it slip out? is that possible?

Oil level is good.

I have another theory, I only know this as it happened to my old car. As the car was Sorn for a little while with hardly any petrol in, I wonder if the fuel pump was exposed and corroded a little, so perhaps its periodically getting stuck above the fuel level. So when it stutters it running on fumes? I mentioned that if I dont accelerate and let it run it will fix itself, (fuel pump slowly adjusting to correct position) well that happened once but ive only had it happen a few times.

As the car was Sorn for a little while

The car was probably SORN's because it had the same fault as it has now. The seller sold it instead of fixing it either because after throwing loads of cash at it the fault was never traced or he simply decided it was easier to pass the problem on.

Whichever its now yoyur problem.

The joys of buying form dodgy private sellers.

Stupid forum did not post then posted twice.

Yeah possibly but not useful now. It's annoying because I cant seem to replicate the problem without driving 50+ miles. Just took it out now and seemed fine. When I took it to the garage the other day they the mechanic pointed at this

imgur.com/a/G7p4V the white cylinder besides the battery. I got a bit overwhelmed with the technical info and forgot what he said about this part. What is this part?

Also not sure what this is and if it should be plugged in.

bump. Any help from these images

"im no mechanic "

This is self evident.

" It would then struggle to turn over a couple times but evenataully work "

Your white cylinder is the fuel filter and the unplugged thing is the diagnostic access socket.

What plug in there is a scanner or code reader.

But at the risk of nagging,

When an engine struggles to turn over it's either a duff battery, sorted,a bad alternator which would mean the car woud run until the battery would get so low it wouldn't power the cars systems.pretty much exactly matching your 50 mile fault.

Engine partial seizure which would go with high temp on the gauge.

or possible coolant leak into a cylinder indicating heqad gasket failure.

So going on your lack of mechanical experience,

No offense meant,

buy borrow a volt meter/multi meter and connect it to the battery and monitor the voltage for 50 miles.

It should never drop below at least 13V.

Less than 12V and you have a charging fault.

Unfortunately its not as simple as that with modern smart alternators - but I have no idea if the Mazda 6 has one.

Old style quality alternators would charge at about 14.4 volts after starting and then settle at about 14.1 to 14.2 once the charge was restored. Lucas alternators were an exception, they would charge at about 13.7 volts which is probably why so many BL cars had electrical issues.

Smart alternators can charge as high as 14.7 volts (probably more) but when the battery is full the charge volts can fall to virtually zero depending on whether you are braking or accelerating. Put a volt meter into the ciggy lighter of our Kia Ceed and it was very interesting

They need special batteries to do this, a lead acid one would soon fail.

mazda 6 Takuya - Car power loss, accelerating = stuttering. - hardway

Granted but I suspect his voltage to be low,

Smart charge or not as he stated when this 50 mile fault happens the engine won't even crank over!

I just want a variable cleared up.

I remember a vauxhall with a check engine light on and two garages being unable to clear up the faults.

I'd like to claim clever diagnostics but as soon as the bonnet was opened the stink of sulpher hit hard.

Thing was charging at over 17V!!

No offence taken, this is a very useful answer! thank you very much. I'll update when I know just for future users coming accross a similar problem.
