2013 Ford Focus - Gear Oil - Abiola Soremekun

I ve been trying to check and top-up if necessary the gear oil in my car, but I'm unable to locate the applicable part for this activity.

Please help.

I absolutly hate gearbox oil,

it stinks!!

so to avoid contact with the stuff If possible I try to remove the speedo drive from the rear top of the differential,

then an old gearbox oil container with the base cut of serves well as a funnel and I pour the oil into the "funnel" and let it go in at it's own speed.

Of coures this way only works if all the old oil is drained out first.

then the exact amount can be poured in..

Job done and my hands don't stink!

Assuming it's a manual then the box on these is maintenance free and shouldn't need topped up certainly not at this age anyway. There's no dipstick and unless you've done a huge mileage I wouldn't worry.

In over 40 years of driving I have only ever needed to top up one gear box. That was in a Golf that had covered a very high mileage and the drive shaft oil seals were leaking. It was obvious it needed checking from the oil loss in the garage. New oil seals cured the problem for pennies but were a total pain to fit, took a mate all day.

Gearboxes do not use oil so if none has leaked out the level will still be at the orignal point.

Back to the Golf, had a work colleague who also had a Golf and the local garage checked his oil level during a service. Unfortunately the enthusiastic apprentice removed the wrong filler plug (it was actually part of the reverse mechanism) and wrecked the box resulting in a rebuild that the garage had to pay for. So if you decide to start tampering buy a manual and be very careful.

As a point of interest, the Hyundai dealerchanged the gearbox oil as part of the 4 year service on my i30. Possible placebo effect but the change did seem slightly smoother aftrewards.

Considering that all the components on a Kia and Hyundai are identical its amazing that changing gearbox oil is not a service item on the Ceed.

Suspect they were bulling you to make you feel good about them.

Bet they did not show you the oil thay had drained.

Considering that all the components on a Kia and Hyundai are identical its amazing that changing gearbox oil is not a service item on the Ceed.

Manual gearbox oil replacement is not on the i30 diesel's schedule either it's just marked as inspect on each service.

I have Hyundai's official service schedule for the i30 CRDI. It shows the exact mileage / time for each operation. Oil and filter is every year. Air filter, brake fluid and clutch fluid is every 2 years.

Automatic transmission oil is listed as replace at 5 years (62,500miles) and manual transmission is listed as inspect only for all 8 years of the schedule.

Interestting. I checked the printed, Hyundai headed, schedule of work (to which I staple receipts) and it lists R for replace manual gearbox oil and auto transmission fluid at 6 year service. This for my petrol 2009 1.4 i30, 3 litres of gear oil @ £24.99. This dealer has a good reputation, gave me a good trade-in deal, I believe them to be fair and honest.

I've changed gearbox oil many times, both auto and manual, almost without fail the gearchange has been smoother and/or improved.

Note it's generally the case that makers that offer short warranties don't bother too much about gearbox oil changes (or didn't till their gearboxes imploded too often so had a quick change of policy), could be many reasons for that.
