£5k Budget - Replace 05 Fiesta - Myfanwy365

Hello,

I used this forum around 2-3 months ago to find advice on buying a used Diesel car, you guys helpfully came up with a Hyundai I30 which happily to say I absolutely love & is perfect for what I need.

I now come back for some more assistance, my wife is now looking to upgrade her car, we have a baby due in 5 weeks. Her current car is a 2005 Fiesta 1.2, no Isofix points, starting to get a bit long in the tooth & tired.

She'll be on Maternity Leave for a year so will mainly be doing shorter journeys in this period, once back at work she'll be doing a 20 miles commute on the M53 to work.

I'm assuming she should be looking at a Petrol engine, won't be doing enough to make a Diesel viable. For a budget of £5k, what should we be looking at or more importantly avoid.

She ideally wants a 1.4 engine but a punchy 1.2/1.3 would also be decent.

Any ideas?

If you have that budget, go for a dacia sandero 1.2 petrol. £5995 OTR. you'll get a base model for that, no wear and tear , and 3 years warranty. no tyres or moT's for 3 years, no repairs, just annual servicing. Can't beat it.

Have just persuaded some elderly neighbours to get one.

If you love your i30, you might want to consider an i20. £5k will get you into a 2014 model, it will ba a 1.2, 84bhp though, so should be enough power. Or the i20's sister car the kia rio, which at that budget is (arguably) a better looking car and possibly explains why it would be a 2013 for your £5k. Same 1.2 engine though.

Toyota yaris, your £5k will get you a 2012 1.33 (99bhp)

Honda jazz, this is the most spacious 'supermini' option and, like the yaris, is known for its reliabilty. Engine wise there is a choice of 1.2 (89bhp) or 1.4 (98bhp). £5k will get you into a 2012 or 2013 version.

Mazda 2 is a nice looking, nice driving and reliable car, possibly a bit less space than the other options, but not much in it (apart from the jazz). You will be looking at a 2012 or 2013 1.3, but be aware, there are 2 power outputs available on the 1.3, 75bhp or 85bhp. There is also a 101bhp 1.5, but you would have to go a couple of years older or higher miles.

As well as Isofix points you also need to consider the extra space needed for a car seat - with the framework of a car seat the child sits much further forward and higher so you need pleanty of rear legroom. In addition you'll need a bigger boot to carry all the "stuff" you'll need (pram/buggy, changing bag, bottles/food, high chair etc...)

If a small car is required then look at the Honda Jazz with the magic seats (some lower models don't have this) . The versatility of this car is amazing for a small car. Lots of room in the back seats, very big boot and very flexible magic rear seats. Look for a 1.4 though - much better on a motorway. They are also very reliable.

I recently found one for my sister who wanted a small car that was capable of carrying a double bass - after posting the requirements on this site, she loves it.

Alternatively, how about a petrol version of the Hyundai i30, or ix20?

Honda Jazz is the best for space. 1.2 or 1.4 engines are fine but 1.4 more punchier

Alternatively a late plate (62/13) Old shape Nissan Note 1.4 petrol.

Also consider a Kia Venga of you can find a decent one with full service history, avoid the 1.4 diesel

You may also wish to check out a Fiat Qubo 1.4 petrol. Very cheap to insure and for parts with loads of space. And surprisingly reliable for a Fiat (probably because it's based on a van). Petrol 1.4 version is a nice drive and handling.

Two motors spring to mind. The Fiesta 1.2/1.4 Zetec, make sure it's not the 59bhp version which is deadly slow but the 81bhp 1.2 should be fine for her usage. Don't touch the 1.6 PSA diesel and I'd leave the Ecoboost which should be beyond your budget anyway. The 4cyl Yamaha designed units are pretty long lived if looked after and the Fiesta is a hoot to drive.

The Mazda 2 is also a wee belter of a motor. Shares its floor pan and suspension with the Fiesta but uses bulletproof chain driven Mazda engines. The 1.3 should be enough for most drivers but again they come in two power outputs 73 or 84bhp. The 101bhp 1.5 Sport is great fun and not expensive to buy or run. It's a little firmer riding though.

Check that prams etc fit in both boots. We found both too tight to fit our buggy in with the parcel shelf in place and I'd never take a child in a car with loose items in the boot which could kill them in an impact. We opted for a Polo for the slightly deeper boot and lower depreciation plus it's a little more refined at speed. The only reason I can't recommend one here is because at your budget the normally aspirated petrol engines are too weak and wheezy for anything other than local driving.

Thanks all, we had a look last night, The Yaris, I20, Rio & IX20 were initial favourites. I know the Jazz is supposed to be decent, my mum has an older style & it's pretty bombproof.

Test drive a few first. The Jazz is very reliable, practical and excellent on fuel but it's horribly bland to drive and this is coming from someone who's a big fan of Honda's in general. The latest model is a vast improvement but you're looking at £9k upwards.

For peace of mind with your wife and baby aboard whatever you get put the safety features first, Volvo would be the first make I'd look at. £5k should get something reasonable.

Smaller more modern volvos (2012 on) are rarely availble in petrol, and not at that budget, but the OP has already bought a really good (if a bit mundane vehicle) I know, i have the Kia cousin.. and it goes well, handles well nd has enough safety to keep me happy.

And being a little higher, he and his wife will not break their backs putting a heavy baby seat into a car and then leaning in to fasten the seatbelt.
