Are there any pros or cons of running adiesel with no air filter to help it breath better

Can anyone advise

Ask yourself why manufacturers go to the expense of making them... it's there for a reason so I wouldn't.

No air filter : any dust in the air (ever driven behind a HGV that's just come out of a quarry ?) will go straight into the engine. It will then do a lovely job of scoring pistons, valves, and basically act like sandpaper to all those polished surfaces in the engine.

Basically, it's a really bad idea.

You said "to help it breathe better" You mean like when you run a normally aspirated petrol without the air filter to make a lot of intake noise so you think it's going faster?

It's a 1.9 cdti diesel engine with a turbocharger - there will be no increase in performance running without the air filter, as long as the air filter is not blocked or partially blocked.

Oh - and running without an air filter could let a foreign object - a stone - whatever - into the turbo compressor inlet. If that happens it's goodbye turbo - hallo large bill.

I have just seen your post of yesterday and the reason you want to run without an airfilter.

Sorry- can't really help, unless the airfilter is soaked in oil I would leave it in.

I have just seen your post of yesterday and the reason you want to run without an airfilter.

I've got a feeling if i replace the air filter i will restrict the breathing of the re directed breather pipe, i'm selling the car anyway

just wondered if there was another way to help it breath easier.

i could put some mesh gauze from the entrance of the air box where air comes in to stop and debris entering the engine.

That might work.

That might work.

It's going to stop BIG bits of stones, leaves from getting into the engine, but not dust or small items.

Basically though, it's your car - if it goes wrong and ingests a stone or other item, and blows up the turbo and engine, then you're the one facing a huge bill or a scrapped vehicle.

From your turbo's POV even small dust particles that you can barely see are like smashing the windscreen with a brick!

I'd give your turbo compressor vanes about a fortnight tops.

However, as someone said, it's your car.
