Morgan EV - hillman

The IEEE Spectrum On-line has an article about the Morgan EV which is a three wheeler, likie the original, but with an electric motor and battery instead of the vee twin engine with visible valve springs. The article says that the motor is 'rear mounted'. I wonder if the purists will regret the passing of the long chain that seemed to break at the most inconvenient time. Indeed, I wonder if it has a chain at all.

Moran say that the vehicle will do 90 mph and travel 150 miles on a charge. It has has an ash frame, also like the original, but some carbon composite panels to reduce weight.

Electric? In a Morgan? Wash your mouth out please!

And not a valve spring in sight!

I have seen pictures of this occasionally in car mags over the past year or so, and have to say, i love the idea of it, not to mention the unconventional looks!. Turning something so resolutely old, in style and design, into an electric car is a work of genius. And while a 150 mile range is not that much, especially once you translate that into the likely 'actual' range, which is probably likely to be more like 80-100 miles, it will still be ample for the type of running one of these will get.

The existing 3 wheeler is without a doubt one of my favourite cars, you can keep your ferrari's, lamborghini's, mclaren's etc, i'll take a morgan 3 wheeler (in green, with the 'teeth'!). I remember Richard Hammond taking one on one of the 'challenges' on top gear and thought it looked absolutely brilliant. Seeing him getting one up on May and (esp) Clarkson in the 'donut challenge' was particularly amusing. Though i must confess, while i would expect an ignoramous like Clarkson to not understand why the morgan was so good at donuts, i thought May would have realized that being front engined, rear drive, with only one (relatively narrow) rear wheel would make it much easier to break traction then his caterham or Clarksons ktm x bow.

Looks brilliant! I wish there were more cars like this but a bit cheaper. After watching the video I wonder which would be more fun in the real world. The Caterham is faster but at legal speeds there probably isn't much in it. As you can get a Caterham (slower than the one in the video) for less than £20,000, I'd probably go for one of those instead. The 3 wheeler may loose the rear, but the Caterham may loose your license.

I'm assuming you mean the caterham 160?, which is the one that complies with the Japanese 'kei' car regulations with its 660cc suzuki turbo engine (and rear axle from a suzuki carry van!). The performance of it is very similar to the morgan, i.e, fast enough to have fun, but not really enough for your license to be in too much danger!. Anyway, i love both of them, but i think the morgan just edges it for me.

Saw it at the lms last year, it looked good, very niche though
