Peugeot 508 - ding/dent at the zoo - nicky cruz

Returned from a few hours at Edinburgh Zoo only to find my car had a large scrape/dent in the drivers door.

No note was left, and no vehicle was parked next to mine on our return.

Reported incident to police, spoke to my insurance, and informed the zoo - who later told me that their carpark CCTV didn't cover the area where mine was parked.

Do I have any other option that just accept the damage and pay for the repair myself?

Feel a bit vexed that having forked out £80 for six of us to visit the zoo, and an extra £4 parking, I'm now left with a possibly expensive repair (not worth doing it via insurance - unprotected no claims, and a £250 excess)

Very irritating but unfortunately all too common, I expect most of us on here have suffered the same misfortune. I personally wouldn't have bothered informing the insurance company but in theory it's the correct approach. Shop around for a cash quote at various body shops, you might be pleasantly suprised. Or if it is an older car, weigh up the pros/cons of not bothering and treat it as a battle scar, Parisien style. There is another option if it's a relatively worthless car, to DIY. It's very satisfying and a half decent repair is possible, if you take enough time over it and are a practical sort. Particularly successful in hard to see areas low down on the car.

I sympathise with you but life is too short to get really upset about it, it's just metal/plastic at the end of the day and stuff happens, as they say

PS I see it's a modern car, so my ramblings about DIY probably don't apply!

Thanks Bazza

Yes unfortunately its a relatively new car to me - only had it a couple of weeks, so was a bit of a sickener when I saw the damage.

I will just have to take it on the chin, shop around and not let it spoil a good day :)

You've rather answered your own question - there's no evidence of the incident or who caused it (unless you write to several local papers to ask if anyone saw it - unlikely to bear fruit), so, depending upon the scale of the damage (if its significant, but not costing considerably more [I mean £150 - £200+] than your insurance excess), it would be better to get it repaired without involving the insurers, IF, despite telling them about the incident, they say (get this in writing [email OK]) this won't affect your premium next year.

The problem is that for relatively minor claims, these can up your premium (even with protected NCD - the 'starting premium' just goes up and you keep the same % discount - a rip off in my view) for several years afterwards, costing you MORE than the cost difference if you paid for the repair entirely out of your own pocket and didn't involve the insurer.

Appreciate your thoughts Andy -

Interestingly enough, the Scottish Police put it into the 'hit and run' catagory and visited me in person the following day just to follow up and confirm details.

I was quite hopeful for a bit, but there was never any guarantee that the CCTV at the zoo carpark would identify the area (let alone the incident), and unfortunately they didn't.

I agree re overall cost of making an insurance claim is not worth it - I will ensure my general enquiry about the incident is taken no further and closed so as not to affect the future premiums.

What is galling, is that I only upgraded the car a couple of weeks ago - when I think of all the various old, and low value cars I've had, and how little damage they have received, its a bit of a b***** to get a good car, and within a few days someone hits it and runs.

Must have had a bit of karma to work off :)

Hi,

what are you thoughts on the 508?

Did you buy it new or pre reg? With a big discount I assume?

which engine?

Hard luck. As I said a week or two ago on here, that's exactly when things happen - to a recently acquired vehicle. Just don't get too paranoid about it :-(

Does the carpark exit have video coverage? You might be able to spot a car coming out with corresponding damage if it does.

I know its a bit late now but this is where investing in a dash cam could be worth it, it won't stop you getting any car park dings, but it may record the incident that could help in the future, have you thought about a smart repair? or is the scrape too big for this?
