Just when I have suggested a Dacia sandero to my pensioner friends...

With thr right pricing MG could have done this!

Absolutely agree. MG are a budget Chinese brand which should've been priced accordingly yet they thought they could pull the wool over U.K. punters eyes by importing the cars with minor trim missing which was then finalised in the UK by a small team then a Union Jack stuck on the tail.

The crippling depreciation on the MG6 as the trade return it to its true bargain basement station used means owners have faced over all costs far in excess of more mainstream and better engineered cars. Had they priced it in a similar vain to Dacia the diesel 6 would've seen success within the taxi trade and could've developed a sound foundation for the rest of the range from there. It worked well for Skoda and Dacia's dominate taxi stands throughout Spain and many other European nations.

I do think that Dacia are missing a trick by not introducing a larger hatch, saloon or MPV in the U.K. The Dacia Lodgy and Dokker MPV's and vans are everywhere in Europe and a larger hatch based on the last gen Laguna with the robust 1.5 dci engine would make a good cheap taxi.

Renault/Dacia are also clever in that they can back both horses and where Dacia isn't known they rebadge them as Renaults to benefit from a well established name.

I was watching Colombia with Simon Reeve on Sunday evening and he was in a Dacia Duster, except it was a Renault Duster. Same in India - no Dacia, but you can buy a Renault Duster and Lodgy

The problem with the MG is the only people who used to buy MG in large numbers were the British and times have moved on in the last 70 years. It is a forgotten brand.

I agree with the above.

SAIC have enough funds to play a medium - long term strategy with MG

Compete with Dacia on price, grow the range, improve market penetration and brand awareness, get the fundementals right about price, reliability and durability then make the attempted move into the congested middle ground of car manufacturers.

Very impressed with the recent Dacia facelifts, cars interior and exterior looks good.

Laureate top of the range trim looked very smart on a 17 plate Dacia Sandero.

Presume the new 1.0 base engines are more efficent than the 1.2 engines they replaced? Which Renault product was this engine previously used in?

New Dacia Duster out next year with 5 seater and 7 seater option.

It should sell well as there are very few budget 7 seater options.

I still think Dacia are missing a trick not selling the Lodgy and Dokker in the UK, certainly a market for them and none of the current products on sale from Renault UK would feel any sales pressure.

It's a very long process to move a brand's perceived market position upwards - it's taken Hyundai 3 decades to get where they are and there's no magic way of doing it quicker

The problem for MG is the cars are no longer MG. The marque has been destroyed. And the cars are not up to the marque.

You mean teh cars are not out of date badly built junk with built in major weaknesses?

That was the case decades before the Chinese got involved, in fact, arguably even before they started putting MG badges on metro's maestro's and montego's. The rubber bumper BGT's and midget's looked awful and the raised ride height ruined the handling, surely the most important aspect of a 'sports car'.

As for dacia, i looked enviously at the dokker's i saw in Mallorca on holiday last year. I would be very interested in one to replace my ageing transit connect. I really dont understand why they dont sell them here, they are a much nicer looking van than the kangoo (or citan!). Instead we get offered the duster van, which looks good and im sure will suit some, but its payload is a bit feeble to cope with my water tank!.

I for one never forgave Rover group for that horrid Tata built city rover thing, they were falling apart as we delivered them, but worse whoever made the decision to plant our national flag on the bootlid of that appalling piece of junk should have been marched to The Tower, and still there in chains.

They were cheaply made for a third world market but had MG/Rover sold it under a sub brand, say Austin or even just Metro at a more realistic price it would've been a success. They paid TATA around £3,000 for the base car and made a few trim and suspension upgrades which cost buttons. If they'd priced it from £4,995 then it would've made for a simple and mechanically robust budget car. They used old Peugeot engines and transmissions and resisted rust quite well. Interior trim was egg crate quality but this would've been forgivable at such a low price. But instead of setting realistic expectations the management listed the base model at £6,495 and top spec cars were touching a completely rediculous £9k! Everything has its price and these were actually quite tough mechanically, thus the reason why despite such miserable sales there's still a fair number on our roads still and there are countless thousands of mechanically identical Tata's running around on India's dirt roads.

And it was far too expensive. I might have done better if it had been priced properly and been named Austin Metro.

MG started as tuners of Morris cars - so putting their badge on Cowley-built Maestro, Montego and 75 was just returning to their roots.

As dire as the sports cars became, that was for the lucrative US export market.

Metro, Maestro, Montego were worthy of the badge. Even more so the ZR, ZS and ZT. The MG6 just wasn't good enough and the public knew it. The Chinese should have waited until they had a car worthy of the badge, they haven't yet, and I can't see anything worthy of changing that.

Most people won't even know what it is

I have said it before, but here goes again..

MG3 priced at £5995 for base model.

MG6 £9995 ditto diesel 1.9 @ £10995 fr the taxi trade (and others)

MGGS £12995 ditto

Compared to the ssangyong revoltivoli the GS almost looks good....

At £12995 iwould certainly think of it against another Kia venga.

Yup, they've got to pay their dues, ain't no shortcuts. Hyundai and Kia took decades before they could command mainstream prices as did the Japanese manufacturers. Proton was a fine example of what happens when you set unrealistic prices. Our firm binned the franchise when they became too greedy.

So was Chevrolet - as Daewoo they ticked along below Hyundai/Kia but excellent value - then GM rebadges them as Chevrolet, puts the prices up to Vauxhall levels, higher really since discounts were harder to get - and then they wondered why few bought Chevrolets.

Agree with the above examples , Proton and Chevrolet are 2 companies who believed their own hype.

SAIC should sell the MG at cost or even as a loss leader on finance for a few years to penetrate the market, they seem to have convinced themselves the MG badge still carries prestige with a significant part of the population

I think SLO hit on something earlier when he mentioned the citirover should have been badged as an austin.

How about an MG3, badged as an austin, or even morris, priced at the levels oldroverboy mentions. Bring the fight to dacia!. Of course the SAIC are too greedy for that, but i think it would work.

Going back to the citirover, i do remember reading about the car leading up to its launch, specifically how cheap the tata indica (as it was known in India) was in its home country in comparison to the UK prices.

When the last of the Autin Rover badges cars were killed off they had a bed repuation and without the sporty image that MG has so can't see any point in that name coming back.
