This new half wit spammer that's blitzed the forum, do not click on any links, i accidentally hovered the mouse over the posting and my Malwarebytes security immediately put up messages of blocked sites.

I've put this message on main forum so everyone sees it, yes i know most of us regulars would rather stuff termites down our Y fronts than give a spammer a single second of satisfaction, but someone new might not be as wary.

Thanks, GB.

I'm hiding the stuff that's in this section - there are about 40 of them - but this will be the last time I do it. Each one has to be hideen individiually, and I've got better things to do with my time!

I'll let the HJ editorial team know that they'll have to do something about it, as they have with nearly all the k****** spam.

Just a thought :

To ease the workload of Avant and the website admins, I'm sure regulars on here would be quite willing to 'flag up' items as spam. Coding could ensure that if any 2 of those regulars did so then the post would be deleted, or even all posts made by an account in the last few hours deleted, which would avoid the need to go through each thread.

I know a lot of forums prevent new accounts from posting links until a certain number of posts and/or a certain time period has passed.

A good idea RobJP, i'm sure there's some of us here would be glad to help out if Avant wants to have a word with the guvnor and get it ok'd, these idiots are of no use to man nor beast.

Easy, don't allow anyone to post links. and let Avant enjoy his retirement.

Being able to delete all posts made by a particular account would be the way to go. Don't mess about with it being within the last few hours. Just a button to press which would delete everything ever posted by that particular account and close the account. A Terminate with Extreme Prejudice button. It ought to be possible for the moderator to do this with some option in the forum software. Put in the terms and conditions that spamming will result in all posts being deleted and the account banned. Then do it.

Agreed - with suitable safeguards to prevent accidental picking of the wrong account. Perhaps also a check that the account has been used within the last week ?

Thanks for the help and support chaps.

Not allowing links would be drastic but might be a way forward: if a regular wants to recommend a dealer, product etc. they can quote the website name and people can simply copy and paste on to their browser.

Any further thoughts on this? I'll write to the HJ team later this evening and refer them to this thread..

As annoying as these scumbags are blocking all links would be overkill. We often ask people asking about particular motors to link the advert or likewise we post links to adverts as suggestions. Extra admins possibly needed, some of us are on here constantly and would spot spammers quickly.

There are 2 types of links....

this www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=distance&...3

and this...

spam.com (hidden link)

If the Kia and Chevrolet forums can manage it, I am sure a site like HJ can do it too!

Still happy to delete spam as i find it if asked. (happy to leave moderation to Avant)

The comment about links to potentially unsafe web sites is a big concern, it only takes an accidental click and possibly a PC's been infected. Who's to blame for that? Dangerous stuff indeed.

any - New idiot spammer, don't click on anything. - scot22

A very good point Smileyman. It is easy to accidentally open a link. They are not essential. Have none then no problem.

Unfortunately, that has it's own problems.

People can't post up links to cars for sale that they're considering, which could then be reviewed and examined.

We can't direct people to HJ reviews section, for example - quite often new people will come onto the site with questions, and we can direct them to the 'What's good/bad' part of the reviews section.

We can't post up links to the DVLA MOT history site, for people to become better-informed.

This is a forum where we try to help people - or at least that's my take on it. Remove links, and you remove a large part of that capability, or at least make it more awkward to work around.

There was a classic example of this a couple of months ago with a Honda CR-V. Having the autotrader advert meant that the person asking found out that it had done no mileage for 18 months, and tax had run out and never been renewed about 16 months ago. So it had sat on a forecourt for all that time.

Information which they would have never known how to find out beforehand - and they were very thankful, and now knew how to do some of their own research in the future - because we posted up the links to MOT and car tax sites.

We are knowledgeable and 'petrolheads', for wont of a better word - but we are the exception, not the rule. We disseminate information - or try to, at least, and attempt to help those without the information and knowledge, and provide them with the means to help themselves in the future.

That's what this site is about, basically. Providing knowledge that the average punter doesn't know, and making them better equipped.

I would have thought autotrader adverts have numbers that would be usable as alternatives to full links .... anyway such problem could be resolved by having a list of approved sites for links although I accept there would be a downside in so far as management of the list.

I think the vast majority of us are wise enough to know if a link here is likely to be safe, or not.

The current spammer is a spanner of the most obvious sort, but usually it isn't hard to spot the ramblings of a poster you wouldn't trust.

The internet is full of dangers and we all have to take our chances up to a point, i got caught last year when i clicked on an innocent looking PDF file of watch instructions, that click unleashed a torrent of infections, microsoft security essentials proved utterly useless and i had to cut the mains power immediately to stop total ruination.

Afterwards the PC was full of unwanted stuff, i downloaded every free security suite i could find, nothing could shift the things properly until i dropped on YAC, that shifted the things but once in a while something still cropped up, usually an unwanted sale type pop up.

Since then i signed up to Malwarebytes premium which is keeping things under control and i am back to normal service, haven't seen a single hiccup or anything unwanted since i got that software, though for a time before i installed MWB i thought i would have to buy another PC, it's the first time i've paid for protection but seeing how its working and how quick it was today to block the current half wit spammer's rubbish just by holding the mouse over his post is enough proof for me to keep the premium service.

Quite right Rob abd I have benefitted as much as anybody. Perhaps it is simply a case of balancing issues and leave things alone. I've the same security GB - obsessed with safety everywhere.

I've the same security GB - obsessed with safety everywhere.

First time i've ever paid for protection but i'm impressed, it just carries on in the background does a scan every morning which i don't even know about until it puts up a box for a few seconds telling me scan complete and no threats discovered, every now and again it will not like a site i'm about to open and won't allow it unless i specify it as ok, but apart from that i'd never know it was there.

Can't remember how much a year it is, not much considering it does what it says on the tin and even a technophobe like me can navigate it.

I was surprised and dismayed how useless the well known and recommended by knowledgeable folk the freeby securities were against this attack, only YAC (which i understand is in some sort of dispute with MWB) managed to shift the infections but after a few days odd things started happening again and sure enough the problems were still lurking in the background and spreading, shifting that lot to get to that stage must have taken me around 2 solid days, but once i bit the bullet and installed MWB Premium nothing since.

The freebies are good - but not as good as one of the better subscription packages - but using both helps.

I use ESET Smart Security 9 which was £76.94 for 3 years, slightly more paid annually plus the free editions of MalWareBytes and Spybot.

Ironically, the Back Room triggers a security warning from Mozilla Firefox every time I log on - the only one of the forums I use to do so.

Initially yes it did, which is more than can be said for the free versions of almost all the major players much to my surprise, but this infection was stubborn indeed.

As usual, the HJ team responded to my message immediately, and (without revealing too much in public) I've been given a way of dealing with it without too much effort on my part. I think it'll work but the HJ team are on the case if it doesn't.
