FORD MONDEO LX - 2005 MONDEO - DOOR KEYS WITHOUT IGNITION CHIP - greybeard

We have only one key (which includes remote unlocking fob) and need at least one more key.

The car isn't worth much so it's certainly not worth having a spare key created.

We've got around this with a previous car by having copy keys cut for £5 each for each regular driver. These were used to lock & unlock the door, the real chipped key was kept hidden in the car for starting. This system worked well, the "master " key never leaving the car.

Can we use this idea for the Mondeo? We happily accept that the alarm system will not be armed, but is the door lock of the Mondeo simply mechanical and would therefore work with a cut copy, or does it additionally require electronic signals from the key inserted the doorlock?

The transponder chip in the key is for the engine immobiliser only. The system prevents the engine from being started with anything except an authorised key. It has nothing to do with the remote central locking or alarm system.

The only exceptions that I'm aware of are on some older Renault models that use an infra red transmitter. On those the signal disarms the immobiliser at the same time as unlocking the doors. Far more common are the radio frequency remote systems which most vehicles use.

What I have done on many older Fords ,is to dismantle the key and carefully remove the glass immobiliser chip from its rubber sleeve.tape this to the area around the ignition switch that allows the car to start.you can now get as many basic keys cut as you need to open/close the car and start the engine.
