Ford Mondeo - Ford Mondeo 2.0 petrol Ecoboost reliability? - Matt@

This one has caught my eye. Seems quite quick and a bit frugal on fuel and also I can only see them in auto form ( ideally I want an auto)

So is the Mondeo 2.0 petrol Ecobbost engine any good? Also how good is the auto gearbox? Finally is any of it especially expensive to repair?

The 2.0 Ecoboost is pretty robust if serviced properly every year by someone who knows them but it is a complex and powerful motor so I'd buy only with a complete Ford main dealer history and again only if it's been serviced every year and not biannually as some service plans dictate.

Fords Powershift gearbox is a complex automated manual in similar vane to VAG's DSG box and is no stranger to problems. The six-speed wet clutch Powershift in larger Fords like this however is better than the dry clutch set up used in smaller cars but I'd be wary of it in the longterm. Fords excellent manual gearboxes are a far better bet and the 2.0 Ecoboost Mondeo is a great thing to drive as well as fantastic value for money used.

What age, mileage and price is the car you're looking at? Post the advert if you want an opinion on it.

havnt got a specfic car in mind though budget is £6K to £7K

your comments re. the auto box are putting me off! I so want an auto though. Trouble is my budegt is a max and really wanted to spend less. I had in mind to go for an older big diesel which seem to suit autos more but have a feeling these cars are going to be dinosaurs with al the fuss over diesel engines.

Good. When buying a used motor you should always keep it as simple as possible. These automated manual boxes have a poor reputation for longterm reliability, even the Japanese can't seem to make them last preferring to stick with more robust CVT or conventional torque converter boxes instead.

I get the appeal of a lazy slushmobile with a torquey engine and autobox but your budget won't stretch to a good premium luxury diesel auto, you'd end up with a money pit with a mileage knocking on the door of 100k. It's madness to buy a car that cost the guts of £40-£50k in the belief that it will provide reliable cost effective transport on your budget.

If you must have a big auto then a Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis or Lexus IS250 (all petrol) are worthy and robust. None of them use a troublesome automated manual box and there's not a turbocharger or DPF among them.

what a horrible back end on the early accord!!

best car I've ever driven was an Accord Areodeck petrol something like a C reg - absoloute perfection but I got scared off by parts prices...

Not the most stylish but I've had good service from Honda's and Toyota's over the years and they're hassle free for selling, they never come back again.

I've been looking at the similar car...2.0l petrol ecoboost auto mondeo. Titanium X model.

Whilst diesels are great for high mileages I only do 5/6k miles a year.

Have looked at and driven 3 different Mondeos and they come across as a lot of car for the money. Most big barges (Merc, Audi, BMW) favour the diesel engine but I don't want, or need a diesel. Limits my choice.

The Mondeo, like most cars, needs looked after. The gearbox oil and filter needs changes every 30k miles or so and the rest of the car needs a good solid Ford service history and kept that way. Trawling the internet I have not seen that many failed Ford auto boxes.

When I do buy I will either take out a garage 2 year warranty cover or an independant one for 2 years just to be sure.

Tried a Mazda 2.5l 6 older model with manual gear change..was disappointed. Haven't tried an auto Mazda 6 with a 2.0l engine but just know I will be disappointed.

Honda accord?

Any other petrol, auto 2l cars out there??

PS You can bluechip the 20l ecoboost engine to take it from 203bhp to 240bhp and similar mpg. JUst got to find a decent one now.

I do like the look of the newer Honda Accord ALOT! around year 09/10. But why oh why have such a silly boot layout where it narrows so much half way along....
