Honda Civic 1.8 discrepancy in the mileage. - Rusties

Hi , just spotted a Honda Civic which I am very intrested in but checked
the MOT history and there seems to be a discrepancy in the mileage.

2015 is 60k

2016 is 98k

2017 mot shows just 68K


Could this be human error or should I look elsewhere .

Human error is very possible. How does it tally with the service history? If it doesn't have a service book it's likely it's been binned to cover up the fiddled mileage. If you're still unsure then call the servicing garages to see if they've ever seen the car or if they even exist. You should never buy a car without proof of annual servicing especially on a chain driven engine like this.

On a further note you will find its future resale value severely weakened by a mileage discrepancy like this so even if it does check out you shouldn't pay too much for it. It'll flag up when any dealer does a search on it later on.

You've misread the mileages. The recoded mileages on the Mots are as follows.

The two above must be different cars as that's certainly not the mileages stated on the MOT history website.

For the reg plate on the advert, the car failed an MOT on 12th Dec, with the mileage recorded as 98,119. The same day, the car passed its MOT with a mileage recorded of 68,120.

Looks like a fat fingered attempt at entering the mileage when it failed. The 'real' mileage was then entered when it passed.

My mistake, I put in a U instead of V as the last letter. Surprisingly it corresponded to another Honda.

It is just an error. The 1st test done in Dec 16 was a failure and the mileage was mistakenly logged as 98,120 yet the later pass has 68,119. Fat thumbed tester.

Thanks for everyone for taking the time out to reply , I emailed the seller who confirmed that it was human error .

Sadly for me though he sold the car today - still looking for a 1.8 Civic .

Look at other brands, there are better cars out there.

I have driven 3 modern Civics. 2 were diesels and rather obviously the other was a petrol. The diesels had reasonable go (not as good as I expected) but the car I drove most was a 1.8 petrol we had as a pool car at work.

Like the diesels it had a truly dreadful ride and was very noisy. But instead of the decent performance of the diesels it was a slug, several guys in the office were convinced it was the 1.4 variant. It did do decent mpg though.

I would be looking at a Focus, a 2.0 petrol by choice but the 1.8 is still pretty good. Good performance, excellent ride and good refinement. Loads to choose from. propper dash as well instead of the digital nonsense.

Way better than a Civic 1.8.

Try one and be amazed.

Either the handbrake was stuck on or that Civic you drove was actually a 1.4 Skidpan. They're not sluggish at all, with 15bhp more than the Focus (138/123) and will hit 0-60 in 8.6s compared to 10 in the Focus. There's plenty of go there if you let it rev, but drive it like a diesel and you'll be disappointed.

I've also never managed to better an average of 35mpg in any petrol Focus I've ran while the Civic will do over 40 without much trouble. I will agree that the Focus is dynamically a far superior car and I'll agree the 1800 VTEC has nowhere near the midrange pull of a modern turbocharged unit but that's not an option at this price range and the Civic does make a very robust and practical cheap family car. I've never had a moments bother with any I've owned or sold.

I would include the Focus in any search, particularly the Yamaha designed 1.6 petrol and also the Mazda 3 1.6 petrol both of which are excellent cars at this money.

Definitely a 1.8. As I said we all thought it was so slow.

Honda bhp tends to arrive very high up in the rev band and I revved it but it was still slow.

0 - 60 times are totally irrelevant in the real world. Its the in gear times that matter and the 2.0 Focus is much better, even the 1.8 is fine.

Modern turbo petrols are of course in a different league but I did not suggest one since the OP is looking at a car of an age they did not exist in great numbers.
