Is there anyone interested in importing Irish cars that are over 3L? Car tax in Ireland is over €1800 for a 3L and over. I know it's more reasonable in the UK. If anyone is interested let me know. At the minute I have 2 Mercedes S500 Lwb. One is 2001 and the other is 2000. Both have UK mot's on them. What are they worth?

I'll give you £50 or the equivalent in euros each as if anything goes wrong at that age the bills will be horrendous. and i'll collect in dublin ...

About £6.50... Old Merc saloons of this vintage are next to worthless over here.

I'm a trader who regularly visits local auctions and it's the other way round. The place is full of Northern Irish dealers paying daft money for anything with four wheels because they can get far more money for them over the water. It might be worth looking north but I doubt there's any business case for importing old low value luxury cars into the UK mainland.

Though the last time I was in Dublin I did notice a lot of Toyota Hi ace vans and minibuses that would be an easy sell over here now they're no longer available new with Toyota selling rebadged Peugeot vans that'll be in bits within 5yrs.

Mileage? Full main dealer history? No of owners?

Part sevice history. 130000 miles. 2 owners.

You'd be insane for touching it. This is a hugely complex motor that could go wrong spectacularly and no trader worth his salt would go near. A fuel pump alone would cost £1,500 and a replacement DPF would Hoover well over £1k and is a common failure on VAG diesels at this age and mileage.

A good example with say 100k up and a fsh would sell at around £9-£9.5k trade and around £11.5-£12k retail but you'd struggle to find a buyer for a high miler without that vital service history stamped up. The trade expects big margins on cars like this to offset the huge risks involved.

It's not something I'd touch with a ten foot barge pole but assuming it runs, has no warning lights lit and there's no blue smoke from the tail I'd expect it to fetch somewhere between £5-£6k at auction over here.

How much does the seller want?

£8000

No money in exporting that over here then Phillip, that's top retail money for one with 130k and only partial history. I'd suggest a rethink here, no one can fault you for trying but you'll land badly if you try to make this idea work. There's no money in it. The UK marketplace is much larger than Ireland's and is highly competitive so used prices are pretty low compared to most others and there's little demand for mega mile luxury cars.

A potential money pit! At least if I got the Mercedes for, say, £25 I would not be concerned about weighing it in if it went wrong!

£50 or equivalent and I'll add £200 if i get it home without breaking down.

My word is my bond.

I see crashed 01 S class selling on eBay for £600. Surely its worth something?

Selling and listing are two different things. It only has and worthwhile value as parts and certainly wouldn't be worth importing. There are a few on Autotrader and Gumtree with dealers around £1k with Mots and ready to drive away. Even at that, they're not quick to sell. Who wants a massive gas guzzler that they could never aford to service or repair when looking at such a tight budget? At auction you'd probably get £300-£600. Does make a cracking banger tour or racer though.

Fair point. Do you have any idea of what the Audi is worth?

How long is a piece of string? I can't see it fetching much over £5k through the ring if even and I certainly wouldn't attempt to retail it, it'll bite you.

That is why my offer is what it is. If i lose £250 after a few weeks/months fun it is no big deal. and paying ved monthly makes it a cheap banger. but imagine 4 tyres.. or any simple repair.

If you think it's worth a fair bit of money, then there's a simple answer : put it on ebay.

I think you need a good heavy dose of reality.

I live in Ireland. I can't place an ad on autotrader. They won't let me. It's on Gumtree.
