Toyota Verso - 2.0 D4D - notagoodname

Any general thoughts on the reliability of this engine (2013 version). Any specific issues that make it an unwise choice?

Is the BMW 1.6 diesel in the 2014-on Versos significantly better?

Toyota Verso - 2.0 D4D - Robin the Technician

Hi,

I had one of these engines in my 08 plate avensis. Prone to head gaskets which requires the engine removal to do. I think (as a Technician) they are a rubbish engine and well avoided. Spend your hard earned cash on something more reliable.

I've had Verso's with both the 2.0 D4D (6 years) and the 1.6 BMW sourced engine (2 years) - never had a problem with either - they've been utterly reliable and neither have required any attention other than regular routine servicing.

I don't find the 1.6 significantly better than the 2.0, and no more economical on fuel - but the figures on HJ would seem to indicate that most owners find the newer engine more economical.

I thought the general consensus was the 2.0D4D was reliable and the 2.2 that suffered CHG problems, but happy to be corrected.

Early days for BMW's 1.6 Diesel, does it have Toyota's sensible service intervals when in a Toyota shell?, if so it will probably by fine.

The recommended service interval for the 1.6 BMW diesel is 12,500 miles / 1 year ... but I've had mine serviced at 10,000 mile intervals (even though Toyota service department asked me why!)
