BMW 520 i 1994 - Insure for the day car insurance - Steveieb
Need to collect my daughters BMW 520i and arrange to sell it from my house. The car is in the way and she needs the room on her drive.
The car is a 1994 BMW Tourer with less than 40000 miles unbelievably and its in remarkable condition for its year.
But although it has Mot and tax there is no insurance. I need to buy a days insurance to cover the journey from Nottingham to Northampton.
Can anyone recommend a suitable insurance company?

Your own insurer may do it.

Yes thought of that but I need to use my car to get driven up there to collect the BMW

But they might insure you 'as well as' rather than just 'instead of'. If they won't, best to try a broker.

Plenty of short-policy insurers out there, they'll cover anything from a couple of hours upwards.

I would recommend Adrian Flux. BTW I insure through them but do not work for them.

One point that had been missed is that Continuous Insurance is in force so that unless a car is stored "off road" and SORN'd it must be insured. Some classic car owners have been caught out by this. Penalties vary from a fixed penalty (£100) to a £1000 fine and seizure of vehicle.

You might find it cost effective to get a quote off Shiply or someone you know who has either a transporter trailer or similar, by the time you've fuelled both ways with one car and one way the other, then paid out on insurance, you won;t be far out of pocket, plus no hassle.

Alternatively an older Beemer like that will be quite light, might be worth hiring a trailer and shifting it yourself.

When we rep;aced one car about 3 years ago SWMBO insurance company were very helpful, started a full second policy for us and when we sold the previous car about a month later we got back all but about £40 of the premium, they cahp who organised it for us said that would be about the figure, we were obviously sceptical but sure enough thats how it worked out, insurance fromone the day insure people was going to cost us £40 for the one day, no brainer.

Thanks Raine Man, but can you explain further. The car has been stored on the drive since a failed eBay sale due to a time waster. So now my daughter wants it out of the way before the Mot and tax expires. The car is of little value now but my indie has said he will try to sell it for her but it means getting it to his workshop which is 60 miles away.
Would appreciate you advice whether the idea is feasible or shal she sell it for scrap which would be a shame.

This link explains the change that came in some five years ago:- www.theaa.com/driving-advice/legal/continuous-insu...t

The idea is to catch uninsured drivers but as is usual in these circumstances it can make life awkward for people like you.

There is increasing interest in nineties Beemers but more in the bigger engined versions. If the car is in good condition it should sell. Thinking a bit more about it as t is over 20 y.o you might be able to get a classic policy for it. When I moved one car from a daily driver (+commuting) to a classic policy the premium was 75% lower.

Many thanks for all your contributions.
I had no idea of how complicated this has become and it may on reflection be easier to dispose of the car from where it is stored.
After the problems with the eBay sale I am reluctant to go down that path again, and wonder if there is a simpler route to dispose of the car bearing in mind it only has one months Mot?

Look in the local paper-usually ads. by firms that will take the car away and may even give you a few quid.

Please don't let it be taken for breaking or by some fool who wants to lower it or strip the paint off to make it deliberately rusty like scene twerps do with VW's.

If you wants to try a sale I am a member of another forum under the same moniker, the title of the forum would give the swear filter here a fit but a bit of judicious googling would find it if you used my moniker in the search...the forum is populated by a varied bunch (be aware they swear like troopers) who prefer and buy old cars and run them for as long as possible, if you can't find it by all means ask Avant for my contact details and i'll let you know.

If you joined and listed the car for sale at a sensible price they would be all over it like a rash i am sure and you will know its going to be used properly again, the vast majority of the lads there are sound.

The nickname evilBay has not come about without good reason. However it is sellers as well as buyers that let it down. A friend was described as a timewaster for not going through with the deal - he did not go through with the deal as the car's condition was far worse than described.

You say the car has a month's MOT. If you could extend this by a year this would up its value significantly. As for selling it may be worth trying the classic weeklies; Classic Car Weekly and Classic Car Buyer. The classic car website I would suggest is www.carandclassic.co.uk/ Also, Autotrader might be worth a try.

Couldn't you try to sell it to a used car dealer in the area where the car is presently situated?

You certainly won't get the best price but, if you just want to clear it out of the way, it might be successful. Perhaps worth a couple of telephone calls?
