I think I might buy an auris. - fray bentos

Looking to buy nearly new hatchback. 6 month old audi a3 is about 20k,similar golf about 17k but a 1.2 turbo auris can be had for about 13k with tons of kit and warranty. Seems a bargain. Am i missing something? Thanks.

Not sure exactly how the OP works out that a 6 month old Golf is quite so expensive.

A few seconds worth of work shows that the 'new' Golf can now be specced, and the 'old' Golf (they still have some brand new unregistered ones) is available at a significant discount, and that's without pushing.

A brand new 'Match Edition' would be £17,440. I'd expect a pre-reg one to be more like £16k

Drop down to the 'Golf S', and they're quoting them at £14,375 from stock and unregistered. A bit of work and hard bargaining from a position of strength could well see that more like £14k or a bit less - they won't want those things sitting on the forecourt when the latest model is there too.

However, if the OP likes the Auris, then go for it instead.

Golf is good but to match the auris you need the 1.4 engine which is 4 times the tax cost plus when you add sat nav, multi function st wheel 5 yeer warranty, rear camera, lumber etc its about 19k.

The Golf is a better drive but I'd have more faith in the Auris for longterm ownership. The Estate is best for resale though so well worth paying a bit extra for, it's better looking too.

Auris is good, but avoid the ADAS gadgets. Pre-collision warning and braking in extremis, auto beams, traffic sign recognition. The radar is very troublesome. I know as I've just had mine modified by the dealer. Not yet sure whether the repeated Multi Information Display message "Front sensor systems are temporarily unavailable due to blocked vision" has been cured. This is with a clear windscreen and no adverse weather like rain, snow, ice, fog. For which Toyota warn the system might not operate. That's winter ruled out from the ADAS aspect!

SHMBO had a hybrid Auris a couple of years ago while her old Focus was being repaired (rear-ended by a tractor). She just.......didn't like it at all. Can't say I liked it much either. It was christened 'orrible 'orace! No accounting for gut-feeling, eh? (although the TV dramas they book-end are good)

I downsized from a (company) Avensis 2.0 D2D estate in September to a privately bought Auris 1.2T (5 door hatch) and am delighted with it so far. Averaging 42 mpg with mostly longish motorway drives. I couldn't see the point of the extra "Toyota Sense" gadgets but did insist on a spacesaver wheel instead of the pump and gunk spray. 5 year warranty was the icing on the cake, not that I imagine I'll need it.
Very obliging local Toyota dealer (main reason I stayed with the brand) gave me test drives with both this one and a hybrid and I wasn't quite convinced by the hybrid. Would have been a lot more expensive and I'm not a big fan of automatics, less still CVTs which you can't hold in any gear ratio (I live in very hilly terrain!) But horses for courses, eh?

Thanks. Can you turn off the gadgets if they fail to work proper ly to avoid warning lite distracting you?

There's pages of problems associated with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system. It seems there's a difference between the systems fitted to different models, with some being affected worse than others.

You can disable the LDA (lane departure thingy) which I have done, as, driving in mostly rural areas, I don't need to be nagged every time I take a sighting line through a bend! I haven't tried to disable the collision warning system as that might have insurance implications.The road sign function is not reliable, so I've tended to rely on TomTom and ignaore the Multi function display.

As for the differences, Auris and Avensis have an early version of ADAS AFAIK, using a different laser and maybe software to Prius 4 and CHR. The latter have what is known as centrimetric laser which is less troublesome, possibly due to lower tendency for false alarms. Someone on here will have a better understanding I have no doubt. Toyota have issued a TSB re Auris and Avensis.

As BT says, see the Owners Club for pages of discussion. I've not had a recurrence of issues since 7 February when the current modification was carried out by my dealer, as for various reasons I've been mostly driving locally, but I may get over towards the troublesome area* later this week to recheck whether the cure still works, and to feedback to Toyota UK. Certainly there is now a heater in the module sitting in front of the rear view mirror, and I checked using an infra red thermometer.

* Error messages seem mostly to begin when in slow moving traffic in roadworks. More detail on the OC site.

Toyota Safety Sense was optional on the Auris up to the 2017 model year revisions. So if one is looking for a six month old Auris, that may well not have Toyota Safety Sense.
