I see today that VW is scrapping its development work on a new 1.5 diesel engine. It'll go on with diesels of 2 litres and above, but none smaller.

Sounds like the right decision, not just for environmental reasons but because there's no advantage in performance or economy over the petrol TSIs. SWMBO's new A1 is still loosening up, but the petrol 1.4 gives the same mpg as the 2.0 diesel V60 (low 40's on short trips, 50 on a long run).

Smart move on VW s part to enter the Chinese market with the Passat B5 which became a familier sight on their roads as a taxi.
Then for Audi to become really popular on the back of this trust shows how to win over this difficult market. But tensions with Japan may have some consequence.
