2003 corsa 1.4 automatic 5dr hatch - auto box problem - billz44

Hi

The car drives fine no problems untill I stop say at a junction.

When I go to pull away the box seems to drop itself into neutral but as soon as I touch the accelerator with a little jerk the gearbox engages and it drives away.

I've checked the oil level which seems fine and the oil seems reasonably clean.

Do not want to pay for a gearbox service/oil change etc if this fault is obviousley something else unless a service is a first step to discovering fault

Appreciate any ideas

Hi

I believe that it's normal for drive to disengage when the car is stopped under brakes (once it's warmed up), this is what my 2005 Corsa does. It saves fuel. My car won't creep until about half a second from foot brake release. Once creeping, nornal takeoff should be smooth.

If I apply accelerator during the half second delay then the take-off won't be so smooth. Best let the car creep first.

Hi

When I stop and remove foot brake the car appears to be in neutral ( selector is in drive) The vehicle does not creep and only engages drive when I touch accelerator.

While stationary if I select N then back into Drive, drive is selected and it creeps forward. If I touch the footbrake it then seemingly drops into neutral.

It acts the same in 1, 2, and 3 but not in reverse.

Reverse acts normally

I'm sorry, you're right. It's the sons car so I don't drive it daily.

The disengagement is an economy measure all the same.

I don't notice a sudden engagement however and takeoff is quite smooth so perhaps your issue is a higher than normal threshold for throttle triggered engagement.Perhaps there's a trigger adjustment somewhere.

Is the torque convertor takeup smooth and normal in reverse, where the disengagement is disabled?

Can you describe in greater detail how the car behaves with forward engagement triggered by the throttle? Is it a bad jerk for example?

I think your quite right what you state but after more research and a visit to my local garage and their input I believe it may probably be a combination of sticking valves in the box ( perhaps gungy fluid) and need of a fresh filter and fluid change being the first port of call as I originally thought.

The car has been standing over the last few years with very occasional outings and only 600 miles in the last year. The garage didn't think it was a major issue.

The take up jerk in drive is not sharp but is fairly noticeable.

Reverse action appears completely normal.
