Nissan Qashqai v Hyundai Tucson - John o Riordan

Hello,

I am purchasing a new car and am torn between Nissan Qashqai Premium and Hyundai Tuscon Executive. I am getting both cara at keen prices but can't decide. Just wondering if anyone could give their opinion on cars and which they would recommend!

I'd be keeping it for 2-3 years, and yes I'm buying new.

If there's no significant financial difference in the costs - then get good test drives of both and let your heart or "gut-feel" decide.

The Qashqai is built in Sunderland, England while the Tucson is made in Lorea.

Then you're free to pick whichever you enjoy driving the most. I ask the length of intended ownership because the Nissan is based on the Renault Megane and shared engines, transmission and much in the way of electronics which are likely to go the way of most Renault's with age but if you intend on running it only during the warranty period there's no real risk. The 1.5 diesel has a decent track record (I've seen them in Clios with over 150k) and is well tried and tested. I've had one in a Renault Kangoo van and the engine was by far the best part.

The Hyundai is a more durable car all round and comes with an excellent 5yr unlimited mileage warranty which shows how much confidence the firm has in the product. I also rather like the more rugged styling.

Of the two I like the Hyundai and the warranty would clinch it for me but buying the Nisssn is helping preserve British jobs which I also value. I buy British built where possible as long as the quality is up to scratch and price competitive. But in this case the foreigner swings it.

The above makes the assumption that you do enough mileage to warrant the diesel variant as the petrol versions of both are a bit lacklustre especially the 1.6 GDI Tucson.

If you looking for auto model, then take note that Tucson DCT models have reported transmission problems.

You can also consider Kia Sportage (does not share DCT transmission with Tucson IIRC).

You can also consider Kia Sportage (does not share DCT transmission with Tucson IIRC).

The Sportage does use exactly the same DCT transmission as the Tucson, hardly surprising when they are both built in Europe, (Kia Slovakia, Hyundai Czech Republic - basically next door) from many Korean parts.

The Tucson/Sportage is quite a bit bigger than the Qashqai. If you need that size car the Nissan X-Trail would probably be worth a look.

I can confirm that the Sportage 1.6 GDi is a slug so would expect the Tucson to be the same. Cannot see the 1.2 DIG-T Qashqai being much better but the 1.6 DIG-T looked very interesting to us a few months ago. The 1.6 petrol turbo Sportage is only available in top spec 4 x 4 versions but they then fit 19" wheels with rubber band tyres to make the car all but useless.
