Honda Civic hatchback - Rear brake noise? - sjh

Yesterday while reversing the car off the drive I heard a squeeking / light grinding noise. For the next couple of miles of driving the noise disappeared but then returned, albeit less noisy.

We had the rear brake pads changed about 500 miles ago (Honda parts).

Any help / thoughts will be gratefully received.

no model. no age..............

However

Honda handbrakes are often small brakeshoes built into rear disks.

Maybe needing fettling!

Civics i've seen from around 2000 onwards have had self adjusting rear disc brake calipers that also serve as the parking brake on the same pad, i think it was larger Hondas that had the drum inside disc parking brake design (a much better system IMHO), but happy to be wrong.

It might just be rust on the discs after the wet and salty roads have done their worse, using the brakes harder will clean them up and you can also gently apply the parking brake whilst moving to do the same...indeed with drum inside disc design, short of stripping them out its the only way to clean the surfaces up.

Honda rear calipers need a bit of TLC now and again, they don't see any as part of the makers standard service shedule to any great extent, at the very least clean the salt off and lube the parking brake pivot now and again, but they need to have the pads removed and the system exercised wound back and lubed up every other year at least when the rest of the braking system is serviced properly...note a bloke in overalls peering through the wheel and squirting brake cleaner in the genral direction of the brakes is not brake servicing.

It seems every Honda I've come across has a H/brake fault of some kind,

Almost every one as a result of overtightened hand brake cables.

Even mechanics can get this wrong.

Procedure is slaken back all the adjustment on the cables,

THEN wind back the pistons and fit new pads.

at this point I normaly work the calliper lever until the piston has advanced out enough.

Only after this can the h/brake free play be adjusted to 4-6 clicks.

Failure to oserve this absolutly will result in one or more callipers will be needed.

Which sounds like yours,

Some monkey has tightened up the cables to give some hand brake function.

This restricts the callipe lever travel so there will be no self adjustment function.

My apologies.

Update.

I have jacked the wheel up and rotated the wheel backwards. Grinding, "ping", nothing, grinding, ping, nothing, etc etc.

Rotate forward, a lessor grinding noise, more a minor binding (similar to the other side).

Binding you say.

Its 3 years old give or take a bit, i'll wager those rear brakes haven't been serviced properly in that time.

If DIY isn't an option i'd find a handy indy by recommendation and get him to service the brakes for you, an old school mechanic is what you need here who understands ''strip clean inspect lube'', fronts too while he's there, not a bod who simply squirts brake cleaner about like he's pressure washing the thing.

Took car to a local garage and they have just rung with the bad news. The problem is a seized inside slider. This has caused the brake pad to wear and it is has gone down to metal and damaged the discs..... They have suggested also replacing the brake fluid.

Thanks to all that took the time to reply.

Thanks for the update, nasty on such a new car.

This is exactly why some of us prattle on about brake servicing, there is no way on earth that caliper or its slider should have seized in 3 or near enough 3 years, proof absolute if any were needed the main dealers are not doing their job, properly serviced brake calipers last a lifetime, the originals ones on my 21 year old Merc operate as good as new, simply because they've been serviced, looked after and lubed, same on our 14/15 year old Outback which sailed through its MOT an hour ago.

Before you get this done, presumably out of your own pocket being a local garage, assuming you've had the car serviced when reqd at the main dealer from new i'd be having a pop at them and asking what they intend to do about it, a properly serviced car as new as your this happening is frankly ridiculous.

In wider terms, its high time all makers required their dealers to service brakes properly at least on major services, or came up with better designed calipers if just peering at the things is what they call servicing.

Oh and yes while doing this it does make sense to change the fluid...if Honda arn't going to offer any goodwill i would get a good indy to fit quality pattern parts here (OE will be eye watering cost as will dealer labour), change the fluid and lube up all the other calipers...if its still under makers warranty the maker or its dealer should be stumping up here anyway IMHO.

Original Honda parts are not "eye watering cost"

For the rear pad set ( four pads to replace both sides) they are £33.22 +vat

For the rear discs (pair) they are £86.36 + vat

I'd be interested to see what the quote would be at the typical Honda dealer for supply and fit of those parts.

A quick browse shows Mintex/Apex rear discs and pads for around £50/60 all incl delivered so yes, even with Cox's deal i still say eye watering.

From Honda, Rear pads, discs and brake fluid = £325

Well GB - we are going to have to disagree on that - original parts at the price I quoted I do not think are "an eye watering price".

>>I do not think are "an eye watering price".

It is compared to my getting the CRV brakes stripped, lubricated & adjusted every 2 years at a cost of £50 @ a local Indie.

Lack of attention to the brakes at the annual service has a lot to answer for in the "service schedule" of all manufacturers - all they get a spray of brake cleaner, at best!

I get seem to 45K out of my front pads & an "infinite life" on the rears.
