KIA Sorento - Unreturned deposit after returning original engine - Paul Allen

Hi all,

My boss bought a recon engine for his Kia Sorento a few months back and was asked to pay a £500 deosit until they got his engine. He received the supposed recon engine and was then told that his own engine was unservicable so he wouldn't be getting his £500 deposit back or his original engine. He is quite (too) trusting and thought nothing of it. When he then had the car serviced a short while after he asked the garage to get the engine number so he could tell the dvla, only to be told there was no need to as it's the original engine number already listed!

So, essentially what has happened is, they received his engine, apparently 'reconditioned' his origibal engine and then sent his own engine back to him & lied through their teeth so they didn't have to pay him his deposit back!

Would anyone have any help or advice? Should we go to the Police, Trading Standards, Citizens Advice, some sort of Ombudsmen (if there is one)?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

The number is usually fixed to the engine block. If the block is servicable it will be reused and the number won't change. It doesn't necessarily mean there are no new internal parts or that no work has been done

He must have sent his engine to be reconditioned to get it back reconditioned, they normally send you an engine to replace yours, then you send yours to them

they then decide if its worth repairing,if not you lose deposit.

I suspect he sent his engine for fixing first, and possibly they got mixed up, as they normally send one to you first

I would think if you show them the engine no is the repaired original they should give you the deposit back, I had that happen a couple of times years ago...

We are thinking along the same lines BT, if so this probably isn't going to end well.

Mistake or fraud? Not easy to tell from the details given!

There are lots of 'reconditioning' firms, from the reputable to the outright crooks.

Some engines are just given a jet blasting or a lick of paint before going back out. I remember in my youth, renting a van to take a second hand engine back, to find the organisation didn't even exist at the address they'd billed me from.

Sounds like one of the dodgy engine companies to me. I would never use them, far better to buy an engine from a salvage yard that has removed it from a crashed car.
