Riding a Moped - Cris_on_the_gas

Those of you old enough to remember the law used to be that a moped had to have pedals. Then various manufactures made "Mopeds" that would do 50+mph, aka the Fizzie & AP50 days. Then the law changed and they were limited to 30mph and no pedals.

Looking at the DVLA categories AM has max speed of 28mph and P, max speed of 31mph.

So if a 16 year old who has passed CBT and has an AM provisional or a car driver who has full AM under grandfather rights ride a sports moped like a Fizzie ?. What DVLA category is a Fizzie or similar ?

I was going to suggest you joining and posting this question on the Fizzy owner's club site but it costs a tenner to join.

I've had a good look around the gov.uk website, and I think the key is that the FS1E isn't a 'moped' by definition due to it's unrestricted top speed - a 16 year old couldn't ride it, and anyone with moped entitlement (ie, pre 2001) would need to take a CBT test & ride it with L plates. There doesn't seem to be any 'exemption' any more for 'classic' 50cc machines.
