Hyundai i40 - Hyundai i40 Clutch Problems - Bycro

Hi all

I have posted previously regarding my Hyundai i40 and the issues I was having with the clutch.

My last post on this was in February 2015 when a modification was made to this as I had been having problems. I have learned since then, that the clutch can be an issue with this car.

All has been well since my last post, until last week when this failed completely. The car was only serviced the week previous to this at 80,000 miles, most of which has been motorway driving. The car will be three years old next February.

I have had many cars over the years, all from new, and most have covered this mileage and more, with no problems with the clutch whatsoever.

Can't help but say I am disappointed, shame really, as I feel this has spoilt what has otherwise been a good car.

is it still not fixed on the 66 plate models?

hyundai have historically had problems with their transmissions and clutches, i know a 12 plate i10 owner who does lots of a road and motorway driving but the car is already on its 3rd clutch.

previous 2 failed, first time replaced FOC by Hyundai second one they wouldnt pay out other than a half hearted good will gesture so they sourced a Hyundai OME clutch at a premium and had it fitted but that didnt last more than 18 months.

The latest cutch is a copy part although it still cost them £300 to have it fitted at an independent garage.

I honestly don't know, Hyundai seem to be marketing their new seven speed automatic dual clutch gearbox heavily which is now available for the i40 but no mention anywhere about improvements to the standard six speed manual manual or clutch.

We had a Kia Ceed CRDi for 5 years. As most will know the Ceed and the i30 are basically the same car underneath (just like the VAG family) sharing most mechanical components. Looking at parts where there is a visible brand stamp its Kia and Hyundai. The Optima and i40 are the same.

I was active on the Kia forums for those 5 years and in truth there were very few clutch issues and most of those the owners eventually admitted abuse (in one case the owner had burned the clutch out attempting to move the car in the snow without clearing the drive) or were 2nd hand cars where the current owner had no ide how the car had been originally treated.

Our car was fine for those 5 years but it must be noted that because the car did not have a DMF (like our previous 3 diesels) the drive train was not quite as refined plus the gear linkage was a little noisier than that found in (for example) Fords.

So I do not think its its fair to concude on this forum that Hyundais have a clutch weakness when only one owner has complained of such.

classic skidpan defensive answer of any car brand he has purchased in the past.

there is thousands (and yes, i mean thousands not hundreds) of complaints of owners of i10s, i20s and i40s with clutch issues.

the gearbox in the old Accent and Rio use to be famous for having syncros made of jelly

the clutches in the diesel 2.0 that was fitted to the sonata around the 57 plate wherre made of cheese.

I dont wish to annoyt you with facts, but the Hyundai / Kia group make some great cars but they do have a long history of models sold in the UK with clutch and transmission issues.

BTW, my partners current shape i10 she uses around London is great!

Like Skidpan, I also had a Kia Rio for 7 years and was also active on the Kia owners club.

Never had an issue other than reverse was sometimes difficult to engage but other than that brilliant.

I have heard of a few issues with the Hyundai I20 clutch though

It would be interesting to see the companies reaction to customer complaints on this issue.

Isolated example I know but our local Hyundai main dealer showed an awful example of ageism towards a family friend who had repeated battery failure on her new I 10. She is in her 80s but very much with it.

They insisted she was leaving the door open and draining the battery, when in fact there was a fault on the main wiring.

I accompanied her on the last occasion it failed as she was so nervous to get the brush off for the fourth time she took to charging the battery every night. Three occasions they reported no fault

Left over the week end at the dealer the car failed to start for them and when they contacted head office they found a batch had a wiring fault.

Had to replace the bulb for her in the boot which she had removed after they accused her of leaving the hatch open.

Talk about VW giving poor service, I would decribe there attitude as hostile.

Regardless of brand, the variability of dealers is huge and often totally dependent on the attitude of the service manager - after a change of service manager, the Hyundai dealer in Birmingham were very straight about any issue, collecting all the evidence and submitting a claim to Hyundai UK - but I heard many stories of other dealers who couldn't be bothered to submit claims to their maker.

From my own peersonal experience of warranty claims, my boss, (the owner) did his best with jaguar/landrover and Rover and often took the " hit" to keep a good customer.

It can go down to the individual dealership, and yes, they can be chalk and cheese.

So far I have no experience of KIA as the car has been boringly reliable.

'nuff said.

Quite correct. If I have been happy with a brand/car I will say so.

Please tell me what is wrong with that.

Perhaps you should join the Nissan Note Forum. There are some absolutely classic owners on there. The Moderators are the worst. When we had had our Note a couple of months I posted our experience so far, all pretty good at that point and it has continued to be that way. I received an e-mail form the site informing me I was BANNED, reason, my post would upset owners who were having issues.

And I am not the only one to have experienced this treatment.

We began experiencing clutch judder on our 2012 i20 when it was 2 years 9 months old. Had it booked into the dealer, and an oil seal was leaking. Clutch was replaced with a modified clutch and oil seal replaced - all under warranty.

Thanks Bycro. My i40 is a 14 plate, done around 45k miles. Out of nowhere it developed the same symptoms as yours. It's always been a clunky box and in fact after a year I asked them to adjust the clutch because unless you tried pushing it through the drivers well into the engine bay, changes were a struggle. So trip 1 to the dealer in York a week ago resulted in £110 worth of gear cable adjustment (? cables?) and Hyundai tech apparently recommended an oil change with a lighter oil. Hasn't made a scrap of difference. Whether warm or cold, it can be a real struggle to get into 1st or 2nd without some serious double clutching. From this thread it seems the problem might be clutch. So Wednesday they are going to check clutch clearances. So two questions 1) Is this likely to be the problem or am I being led up the garden path and 2) what should the cost be? The warranty only covers clutch to 2 years - very clever on their part . . . .

I had 2 i40s both had premature clutch failures at low mileage. And also problems with the master cylinder and pressure plates And compare to my current VW CC the i40 cost and absolute fortune for parts. I'll definitely not buy another hyundai. Lovely car aswell
