Peugeot 207 SW - Foul smel from ventilation system - Steveieb
Can someone please help with this problem which has affected my partner,s car since she left the recirculated air control permanently on for several months.
The air con man has tried everything including smoke bombs etc to no avail. HJ recommended putting the heater on full just before switching off which helped a little but the problem continues but only when the car is first used.
Has anyone had this problem and importantly found a solution?

Have you checked the pollen filter for small dead rodents?

Reminds me of the 'fish down the back of the radiator' prank :-)

I had a similar problem in my last car. Despite checking the usual possibilities -carpets, pollen filter, drain, plenum chamber. I'd very rarely use it on re-circ, although the climate control would sometimes select it briefly.

I also found a 'bomb' to be ineffective.

I resorted to spraying Neutradol into the inlet occasionally. That seemed the most effective.

Yes pollen filter changed twice to no avail. Tried the neutro dol too but the smell soon comes back.its definitely worse in this damp weather.
Is it worth pointing a hair dryer down the air intake to dry the pipe work out?

Maybe it's time to flog it?

Maybe it's time to flog it?

That's what I did, during the Winter when the smell wasn't as bad.

It's a Peugeot so not that much in demand.
But I've heard worse stories about dog odours. I bought a Polo which the owner had used to keep his dog when he didn't want it in the house. Impossible to rid the car of the dog smell.

I seem to remember HJ recommending a bowl of vinegar left overnight in a car to remove the smell of spilt milk. I'd try leaving one inside with the air recirculating for an hour or so.

I bought 4 cans of air con foam spray from the pound shop got long tubes with them squirt down the air intakes either side of the bulkhead and take the filter out spray it up there and on the filter ,never had any probs at all and use the aircon a lot in summer kills any bugs in the system most people dont bother but i used to work in aircon so i know how bacteria grow in the system !

had a an old Renault in for repair went for a test drive and smelt something acrid

Turned out to be the heater unit mounted in the bulkhead had a tiny leak and would put the vapor into the air circulation ducts had the same thing thing on a Granada owned by a DCI it came in for rough idle fixed that but on the test drive smelt that acrid smell signs were sore dry throat and bad taste in your mouth but the worst thing was bad headaches i told him about it because i had to fix it he said his wife drove it a lot and had been refered to the hospital for investigation into the servere headaches and tiredness she had been ill for 6 months ,

So if you smell something while in a car get it sorted out !

Are you sure the smell is originating inside the ventilation system and not, for example, something like a cracked exhaust manifold leaking exhaust fumes which then get sucked into the system? (had that with an Accord).
