We have some neighbours who have been a bit unlucky with their past couple of cars, and one of the other neighbours has allowed them to use their "spare"car for a good few weeks.

A former workmate donated a 190,000 mile car to them, (was being used as a skip!)2 new stop light bulbs later, 2 new headlight bulbs later (changed at Halfords for £5 each + bulbs) a good clean, a fresh mot (no advisories) and voila one happy couple.. insured and taxed.

I am touched that everyone came together to assist a bit.

where do i come in.. well i got my k****** cleaned and the oven cleaned nicely too against some petrol vouchers..

Christmas came early!

I can hear tax collecters and apparatchiks fainting in the ailes from here.

Almost a bartering system went on, favours done, neighbours pulled together to help one of their own out and the govt didn't dip its greedy grubby paw into everyones pocket...hope you feel guilty about that ORB :-)

A proper car from the golden years to boot, as Brum says with one of the best Diesel engines ever.

Brilliant gesture.

Nice story ORB. Got to say my trusty old 1.9tdi PD130 is still a cracker at well over 200k miles. Maybe looking to reluctantly change next year due to new caravan and towing abroad requirements, but it will be a sad day. I donated my old Honda Accord to a few friends for temporary transport, and it got them out of a hole. They were all impressed at how well screwed together the Honda was for a 17 year old car with nearly 200k miles too.

Perhaps when i do change someone on the forum, maybe craigpd130 or FBE might like the vehicle for a runner or spares. We will see when the time comes.

Cheers Concrete

That's very kind of you :)

I haven't had my Passat since 2008, although I have fond memories of it. It was an excellent car: early 2000s VW / Audis were still quality items, apart from a couple of glaring oversights (yes, I'm looking at you, front suspension knuckle bolts)

Can you include me too Concrete. I have an 03 Audi A4 130 Tdi and it would be very useful. Always wanted the Avant version of this brilliant car which I would find hard to replace.

Another vote for those being some well-built cars.

I had an A6 Avant 1.9tdi (130) which I took to 150k miles in 3 years. Bombproof, comfortable, 45mpg, and not bad for grunt either, considering the size of car it was hauling. Then a 2.5tdi (163) A6 Avant after that, which went at 170k, still going strong. That was actually rather fast.

Hi Rob,

Interested to know when you had cam belt changes on the 4 cylinder engine and clutch replacements and other major problems.

Mine has done 132K and the cam belt change at 80K which was 8 years ago. Planning to get it changed next week but its a massive job being a NS engine

The 1.9 i had cambelt, waterpump and rollers/bearers changed at 60k and 120k. Yes, it's an expensive job (£3-400, I seem to recall), but the waterpumps in particular were a known weak spot, and if it goes then the engine is toast. I'd say that 8 years is playing russian roulette.

As to other problems, major or minor : absolutely none. Was still on the original clutch when it was sold @150k. The car is still around now, saw it only a few days ago.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought the water pump was only driven by the cambelt on the 1.9 PD motors when installed transversely (i.e. Golf, A3 etc)?

I seem to remember in North-South installations the water pump was driven by an auxiliary belt, but as I say I'm not 100% on this.

It's always worth checking the cam timing after a belt change on the PD motors, as small changes to the cam pulley position can have quite an impact on performance.

You may be correct, Craig. It's that long ago I can't remember exactly what work wass done on it. I do know it was absolutely reliable though.

Not quite free but I've an old 02 Passat 1.9 TDI SE for sale at £400... Just run in at 177k but looking a bit tired. Make great old bangers.

Thanks for the offer of the Passat SLO.
But I would like to know if it is possible to inspect and check the condition of the belt and teeth rather than embark on a major strip down on my NS installation. This involves taking the whole of the front of the car off and. When Audi had trouble fitting one back together I wonder how Audi could make a routine job more difficult.

6 months on, the car is going well, but still have not located locking wheelnut key but car is going so well they are not looking for anything else yet. Doing the job at very little cost.

That is great to find people who are actually happy to drive around in a good old car. Most people these days would turn their nose up if offered a car like this.

Just an update, One year on, the car is going strong, although the remote no longer works...

Happy Bunnys!

Never heard anyone slag off the 1.9TDI whether it be any VAG product.
