Bought privately, but car has £2000 fault - where do I stand?

"I bought a 2010 Volkswagen Fox last week, privately. I have since had a diagnostic test done by Volkswagen and the results show that cylinder three has excessive low compression resulting in £2000+ of work needed on the car. Where do I stand in regards to contacting the person I bought the car from? Can I ask for any recompense? "
You can attempt to use the small claims track of the county court to sue the vendor for breach of contract. Law here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/

Why is my road tax so high?

"I recently purchased a 2010 Volkswagen Urban Fox 1.3, could you explain why the road fund licence is so high at £170 per year? I had assumed that being a newish vehicle it would be considerably less than the £120 of my 1999 Rover 214. "
The tax is related to the CO2 emissions of the engine, which are stated on the V5C registration document. The Volkswagen Fox has quite an old engine design. The emissions must be Band G between 151 - 165g/km CO2.

I've achieved nearly 45mpg in my Volkswagen 1.4 Fox.

"Once again the subject of EC fuel consumption figures features in your pages. The official figures for my Volkswagen 1.4 Fox Urban are: Combined cycle 42.2mpg, Extra Urban cycle 50.4 mpg. On two recent long trips, one of 340 miles, one of 260 miles, with four people in the car and local mileage for part of the 360 miles, and a heavy load for half of the 260 miles, with two people both ways I got very close to 45mpg on both runs, using either Murco or Shell petrol, full tank to full tank. Not far from the official figures? Maybe it is using a light right foot that does it?"

Do I need to service my car?

"In October of last year I purchased a pre-registered Volkswagen Fox ( registered in June, 2010. ). For a number of reasons, by June of this year it will only have covered some 2,000 miles. Will Volkswagen - as I suspect - insist on it's first service being carried out one year after registration - i.e., in June of this year - or can I delay the first service until October ( 12 months after purchase )?"
It needs a service every 12 months anyway.
