Toyota Auris (2007 – 2013) Review

Toyota Auris (2007 – 2013) At A Glance

3/5

+Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.

-Dull, unadventurous styling.

Insurance Groups are between 10–25
On average it achieves 84% of the official MPG figure

The Auris is a decent enough looking car, a bit like a big Yaris, sitting on a long wheelbase and a few centimetres taller than the average C segment hatchback.

It's a bit more interesting inside, with a flying buttress arrangement housing the gearlever higher than most of us are used to, a commodious centre console and a flat rear floor making it a five seater which is genuinely comfortable for five.

Disappointingly, the ‘Optitron' digital dash is laid out with analogue circular instruments instead of the excellent central digital display of the Yaris that you don't have to re-focus from.

I want a reliable, child-friendly car on a small budget. What do you suggest?

"I have a very low budget as I'm studying at the moment. I need a relatively roomy car as I have two young children so need space for a buggy and shopping. I would like low tax and my budget is £1600. I don't like French cars, I would prefer japanese. I recently sold my imported Toyota BB - which I loved and would really love something quirky again but the budget won't allow it as far as I can tell. I understand a Honda Jazz would be in my price range but apparently there are issues with insurance on cars with catalytic converters at the moment. Is this something I need to consider?"
A Honda Jazz sounds perfect but yes, they do seem to be prone to the theft of catalytic converters. If you're concerned about the effect this will have on insurance prices, shop around for quotes first - this should help your search: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/cheap-car-insurance/ A Toyota Yaris would be a good alternative (although it's not as spacious as the Jazz), or maybe a bigger family hatch like a Toyota Auris or Honda Civic.

What's the best car to buy for £3000?

"I’m looking to buy a reliable second-hand car for roughly £3000. Three or five doors and a 1.4-litre engine. What would be a good make to consider?"
A Toyota Yaris or Auris would be a good choice - they're both very reliable cars with low running costs. Also consider a Honda Jazz or Ford Fiesta.

Can you recommend a product to restore the look of my matte black glove box which won't result in a glossy finish?

"I recently bought a used Toyota Auris. Unfortunately, it has scuff marks on the front of the glove box, which is a matte black vinyl material. You've previously recommended Meguiar's Black Plastic Restorer but it results in a shiny finish. Can you recommend any other products that will adequately deal with scuff marks on a matte black material, please?"
Gtechniq C6 Matte Dash is worth a try: https://amzn.to/2ZvWrcn

What is the expected lifespan for the battery on a hybrid car?

"What is the expected lifespan for the battery on a hybrid car e.g. the Lexus CT200?"
I simply don't get any reports from readers of them failing. We have a 2010 Auris HSD with exactly the same drivetrain as the CT200 and it's never been a problem.
