Advice please - buying a small petrol 4 x 4

"I have been considering the Suzuki SX4 1.6 petrol SZ5 and new Panda petrol twinair 4x4. I'm looking for a small-ish vehicle with some off-road capacity and good ground clearance in order to cope with rutted tracks and steep hills but one that is reasonably nippy in town and on motorways. These two look as though they would do the job. Although I liked it I think the petrol 4WD Skoda Yeti is expensive to run and a bit big, as is the forthcoming Dacia Duster. I'd be grateful for your opinion or any other suggestions that you may have. My budget would be up to £15,000 or so. Thank you."
I'd agree. The Suzuki SX4 1.6 petrol is a sweet and sporty engine. The Panda will be lighter and better able to ride over snow.

Rusty chips

"I have a stone chip just above the windscreen, and it has gone down to bare metal and is rusting. Is this common with Suzuki? They have told me that the roof metal is not galvanised."
Not a common complaint no, but something to watch out for. I'll add to car by car breakdown.

New family car

"Being snowed in for the third time, I am looking at the possibility of an alternative to my Audi A3, to get me back on the road, but don't care for the huge Jeep/Land Rover type 4x4's, which are far too big and ostentatious for my requirements. Does anyone make a saloon car/hatchback 4x4? "
Suzuki SX4 4WD 1.6 petrol or 1.9 diesel. But winter tyres are actually more effective than 4WD in snow.

Two down, one to go

"I drive a 2000W BMW 318SE that I really enjoy but it has not been without problems. It has done 90,000 miles. My wife drives an 06 reg Nissan Note 1.4SE that has done 40,000 miles. Its load carrying capability is very impressive but I do not enjoy driving it as I find the ride hard, the steering too light and, particularly in cross winds, a feeling of instability. We are considering reducing our cars to one and trading in both cars for something to suit us both. We would like a hatchback that feels more like the BMW. Our mileage will only be about 10,000 per annum. Our budget would be £5,000 plus the trade in of our two cars. Should we look at petrol or diesel? I'm not too keen on French or Italian cars."
You don't do enough miles for a diesel. A BMW 118i is an obvious contender, but doesn’t have much luggage capacity. Try a new Suzuki SX4 1.6. It’s roomy, should give you 40mpg plus, copes with potholes and road humps, and is still quite sporty to drive.
