3/5

+Folding hardtop is easy to operate. Car rides well on 15" wheels. Roomy boot when roof is up.

-Rear seats too cramped for adults. Boot space shrinks dramatically when Roof is down. Disastrous, very expensive problems prone to develop.

On average it achieves 103% of the official MPG figure

This job is full of surprises. At the same time on the same morning as one chap handed me the keys to a wow-factor, fully loaded forty grand Mercedes 280SLK, another pair of drivers rather sheepishly delivered a plain metallic grey Nissan Micra C+C 1.4 Urbis. Sheepishly because the other car they had to deliver to someone else was a shocking pink Micra C+C, which had been causing them some embarrassment on the M25.

I did what anyone else would have done. I completely ignored the Micra and drove the SLK. However you have to do what you have to do and the next day, in blazing sunshine, I took the Micra to my usual place to snap it.

Will a 15-year-old Nissan Micra be a good first car?

"I need to buy my first car and I really like the Nissan Micra 1.2 petrol. It's 15-years-old, are there any common faults/problems I need to be aware of? "
The Micra's a very robust little car. I'd want to see evidence of regular servicing. I would also check its MoT history online to make sure it's not a rust bucket, but there aren't many common issues. You can check its MoT history here: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/reminders/mot-reminder/

Winter tyres - should I get them fitted now?

"Last year you advised me of the tyres to fit and I followed your advice and we got through the winter without trouble after having been cut off many times previously. BRILLIANT! We had only a dusting of snow! I had the tyres removed at the end of winter and am now ready to have them refitted. Please confirm that the result will be the same this year!"
I put mine on last Monday, but I have no idea what sort of winter we will have. Last year, like you, I only actually needed my Winter tyres once.

I want to replace my Yaris with a car with a larger boot - what do you suggest?

"I am a lady in my late sixties who plays a lot of golf. In 2005 I bought a new Toyota Yaris 1.3 and it is a very practical and reliable little car, perfect for short trips. However, to fit my clubs and golf trolley in the car, I have to put down one of the back seats which means that my clubs are always on view from outside. I would like to buy a smallish car with a bigger and wider boot. I don't like French cars and have up to £5000 to spend, plus my Yaris as a trade-in."
That has always been the problem with a small hatchback because they are built to accommodate four passengers rather than a lot of luggage. Exceptions include the Volkswagen Up, the Skoda Citigo and the SEAT Mii, all of which have a deep 251-litre boot. Alternatively, with the roof up, the Peugeot 207CC and Nissan Micra C+C have larger boots, but you won’t be able to power the roof down with the clubs in the boot.

Nissan Micra C + C - can't be driven smoothly

"My recently purchased 2007 Micra C + C 1.6 Sport has done 30,000 miles and has been looked after. However, the throttle response makes it impossible to drive smoothly. The lightest touch on the throttle sends the revs up to around 1300 RPM. Releasing the throttle leaves the revs at this level for around 3 seconds before dropping to idle at 800 RPM. The result is a "kangaroo" motion (slight exaggeration!) that leaves the driver & passenger nodding like dogs! My Nissan dealer didn't want to know and I paid a "specialist Bosch Service Centre" £75 to achieve nothing (he cleaned the throttle body) I can't believe all Micras are as bad as this. Any ideas please? "
Probably a dodgy mass airflow sensor which has long been a bug on Micra petrol engines.
