Could you suggest a small, comfortable car with wide-opening doors?

"I need a small, easy to drive car for my parents. They have severe back problems and need soft suspension and, ideally, wide opening doors. If it was economical that would be better - but comfort is more important. Money is no object."
It struck me years ago that the Mitsubishi Colt three-door was very good in this respect, which you can see in the pictures here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-colt-3-door-2005-road-test/ Others include the Ford B-Max because the whole side opens up, but needs to be on the smallest wheel size with deepest profile 185/60 R15 tyres: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/ford/ford-b-max-2012-road-test/

What small and cheap automatic car should my wife buy?

"We are looking for a small automatic car for my wife, up to £5,000. We have found a Mitsubishi Colt and some Honda Jazz for sale, but my research so far seems to show that both these can have troublesome automatic gearboxes. Can you recommend a good, small automatic that has a more reliable gearbox?"
Bot of these in this price range had automated manual transmissions, not torque converter and not CVT. So did a Yaris in this price bracket and small Citroens and Peugeots. A £5000 Fiesta 1.4 auto would be 4-speed torque converter, as would any £5000 Hyundai or KIA, or a Mazda 2 1.5 auto.

Any need to replace anything on a 2007 Mitsubishi Colt CZ1?

"My wife's 2007 Colt CZ1 1.1 petrol is our runabout and does mostly short journeys with the occasional longer run. It's done just over 41,000 since new in Dec 2007 and has been trouble-free and a great little car. We have had it serviced by a local independent after using the main dealer for the first 5 years. I believe it has a chain cam engine but was wondering whether there are any associated parts, e.g. water pump, pulleys etc which it would be sensible to replace at this time? Many years ago, before the risk of cam belt failures became better known, I had a belt fail on a Capri Mk2 and it wrecked the engine, so I would like to avoid a repeat."
The waterpump won't last for ever but it is not normal practice to replace them as a precaution. Good idea to flush and replace the coolant, and the brake fluid, of course.

Can you recommend a cheap used car?

"I'm looking for a cheap second hand car for my partner. She only does 4000 miles a year, but needs something with five doors and a large boot. We've narrowed it down to the Honda Jazz, Mitsubishi Colt and Mazda 2. We've seen a few of each but was wondering a) which is best b) do these all have timing belts or chains? We'd ideally prefer a chain engine to keep ongoing maintenance costs as low as possible. "
All Jazz are chain cam and so are Colts. The old Mazda 2 built at Valencia were Ford Fusion based and belt cam. Check out the problem areas at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar
