Citroen e-C4 Review 2024

Citroen e-C4 At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Recent updates mean the Citroen e-C4 is more competitive than before, while it continues to offer pretty reasonable value for money. There are cheaper alternatives, though, while its 260-mile range still isn't as impressive as some rivals.

+Stands out from the crowd. Good value with generous standard equipment. Family-friendly interior. Clever and useful storage spaces. Very comfortable.

-Performance is leisurely. Less spacious and practical than SUV alternatives. Not as cheap as an MG 4.

New prices start from £29,995
Insurance Groups are between 22–23

The Citroen e-C4 is an electric car that's difficult car to pigeonhole. It has the ride height of an SUV, the seating position of a family hatch and the roofline of a coupe. But it's also very comfortable, represents pretty good value for money and can now travel further between charges.

Is this enough to tempt buyers away from the new Hyundai Kona Electric and Chinese competition such as the MG 4 and BYD Atto 3? Read our Citroen e-C4 review to find out.

It's hard to keep pace with the amount of new electric cars hitting the market in 2023. Many of them are coming from Stellantis - the huge super group which now includes Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall and Fiat (to name a few). That's perhaps why the Citroen e-C4 has just been given quite a considerable update so early in its lifespan.

Cosmetically, the 'new' Citroen e-C4 looks identical to the original car that hit the market in 2021. But in order to keep it competitive, the Citroen e-C4 is now offered with a bigger 54kWh battery pack and a range of up to 260 miles. It's been given a welcome performance boost, too, although it's still not particularly quick by electric car standards.

No, the Citroen e-C4's talents lie in being a very comfortable, slightly quirky family car. A raised ride height means it's easier to get in and out of than hatchbacks like the recently-updated Volkswagen ID.3, while it's also more spacious than the Vauxhall Astra Electric.

We have mixed feelings about the Citroen e-C4's interior - it's a bit ugly, but it's functional and the materials used are of better quality than Citroens in the past. There are some clever touches, too, like the neat storage drawer in the dashboard and the clever tablet holder for the front-seat passenger.

There are now three Citroen e-C4 models to choose from: Sense, C-Series Edition and the range-topping e-Series. Weird names, but we reckon the top-spec Citroen e-C4 e-Series will be worth the outlay for a lot of buyers - particularly as it's not that much more expensive. It's the only Citroen e-C4 model available with the bigger 54kWh battery, too.

Prices for the Citroen e-C4 start from around £32,000, which is pretty good value for money for a very useable electric car (even if the MG 4 does undercut it considerably). If you're not fussed about having the longest range possible, you can save money by searching for a used Citroen e-C4, too - an early example can now be picked up for less than £20,000.

What electric car should I replace my E-Class with?

"I currently drive a 2018 E 220d and would like to replace it with an EV saloon. Unfortunately everything I’ve taken for a test drive seems to have a hard fidgety filling rattling suspension set up. Can you suggest anything suitable ? "
Electric cars generally are firmer than combustion-engined alternatives due to the weight of the batteries. Try a Citroen e-C4 X, it's a very comfortable electric saloon car.

My new car has not been delivered yet, when will it be registered?

"My new Citroen eC4 was ready for delivery in November 2022 but it has still not arrived? When will it be registered?"
It depends on where your Citroen is in the delivery process, but assuming it is not from stock it will not be registered until the vehicle has arrived in the UK, has passed a pre-delivery inspection and is ready to be sent out to the dealership.
