Alfa Romeo Brera (2005 – 2011) At A Glance

3/5

+Interesting styling, Q4 V6 is an entertaining drive, Brera S sounds superb.

-2.4 JTDM lacks sparkle and drinks diesel. Rear seats not easy to get to. Poor driving position. Ungainly long front overhang.

Insurance Groups are between 24–33
On average it achieves 83% of the official MPG figure

Giorgetto Giugiaro styles Alfa Romeo 159 based coupe launched at Geneva Motor Show March 2005. Short back. Very long front overhang.

At its best with the 3.2 litre V6 and Q4 four wheel drive, not with front wheel drive and the 2.4JTDM.

Engine damage from oil loss and overfill

"What would be the difference in damage from an oil loss causing the engine to stop and oil over fill? Initial inspection from taking the sump off is a bent con rod. The head has not been removed as yet."
Can't categorically say that an overfill would cause a bent rod. It's possible that, like ingested floodwater, excess oil in a combustion chamber could cause hydraulic lock (could not be compressed) and would bend a conrod.

Should the dealer replace my car's faulty clutch?

"Last week I bought a 57 plate Alfa Romeo Brera from an independent dealer. Since collecting the car I've noticed that the clutch is slipping. The three month warranty will not cover the repair. Does that make the dealer responsible for the cost?"
Yes. The dealer is legally responsible for this. Don't let him try to wriggle out of it: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/

Wet getting into my Alfa Romeo Brera?

"I have had serious water in rear passenger foot well for two weeks and nobody can solve it. Any idea?"
May be coming in via the doors either because the damp proof membrane between the door trim and door structure has failed or because the drains in the bottoms of the doors have become blocked with protective wax that can work its way down the inside of the door and collect in the bottom. Clear the drains with a wooden skewer (not metal or you will cause rusting).

Fun first cars

"I’ve driven my parents cars for 5 years and am now in a position to buy my own. However, given my age and new recent employment I feel I’d like to skip the typical stages of car purchasing (e.g. First car; Corsa, Fiesta, second car; Golf, Polo, maybe even third; Audi A3?!) I’m looking for something fun, slightly ‘different’ but still suitable for long journeys and ideally under 13k. I’ve been particularly drawn to sports coupes such as the Alfa Romeo Brera and BMW Z4 coupe, both of which are obtainable in reasonable condition second hand. I wonder if you could recommend any other similar vehicles, and also, how bad is the steering on the Z4 coupe? Thanks. "
The steering on the Z4 coupe can be fixed with the right tyres and the right tweaks. Good car to go for with the 3.0 litre engine. Stunning looks. Could soon start appreciating as a modern classic.
