How do I know if a car I want to buy has been written off or stolen?

Get a HPI or Experian check done. It'll notify you if it's been stolen, written off, has outstanding finance, if the V5 has been stolen etc. Don't be tempted to use one of the cheap services you'll see advertised online because they don't check thoroughly into the vehicle's background.
