I'm using a scrappage scheme to buy a new car - can I get a refund of my unexpired road tax?

I'm using Volkswagen's scrappage scheme to buy a new Golf. Can I claim a refund of the unexpired Road Tax on my old diesel car? One salesman told me that I can and another claimed that, because the car will be scrapped, I cannot.

Though the deal is called 'scrappage', there is no Government compulsion to actually scrap the car at all. It will probably be re-sold. Basically, you are part-exchanging it for your new car and you are entitled to the refund of the unused VED.
